Finished my LT1 cam swap today..

Well i finished my cam swap today.. I got an lt1 cam out of a 94 camaro.. Installation wasn't too bad except for how long it took..

Heres a couple things that surprised me:
1. The springs are doing fine. I have 139K miles on the engine, i'm in shock that the springs arn't binding or the valves arn't floating..

2. The exhaust tone changed so much. It just sounds so sweet now..

3. I'm finally done and I can whoop up on those 'stangs at my school now..

I haven't driven it that much yet, i'm making sure there are no leaks and everything is set right.. I installed an accel 300+ digital ignition too.. It was simple, i love it.

Somebody said that I should grind off the water pump bushing, well, either mine didn't have one on the cam or it fit with it on. I didn't have a fitting problem at all and i didn't make a mess...

Ok, i'm a little crazy after working on this car for the past 2 days, so if this doesn't make alot of sense, forgive me.

The radiator & a/c condenser need to be removed. I suggest having the a/c purged before. The a/c condenser is hard plumbed, so just moving it aside without disconnecting it is risky. FYI, the cam bettered my 1/4 mile e/t by .2 seconds. Good luck, Lon.

I dont suppose you would be savvy to writing a step by step tech article.. i have an lt1 cam out of a 94 and I want to install it in mine... if not a tech article,... maybe email me a step by step process.

It's basically summed up here:
http://www.racer-x.f2s.com/proc/caminst.htm

If you arn't familiar with your engine then I wouldn't recommend doing this swap. It gets pretty involved and there is alot of things that can go wrong. The hardest part was getting the valve lash set right. The car will run like poop with the lash set wrong.

Get a TDC locator from summit or jegs, it makes it a lot easier. Get all the other stuff listed on that page, you need it all..

Anyone know how long I should wait to bring the engine's rpms up high? I want the cam to break in first and I don't want stuff breaking. I think I'll go easy on it for the first 300-500 miles...

if the cam and/or lifters are new you should put at least 100-150 miles on the car before yopu really romp on it. if the they are used they are already set in and all i can say FIRE AWAY!!!!!!!!!

you gotta let us know track times before and after the swap if you have them.
congrats on the swap. hopefully my car will be all the way back together, including the cam, some time before the next ice age

later

I haven't ran my car yet at the track, however, I can say it was a SOTP difference.. The cam really does nice above 3000 rpm.. I'm glad I got 3.73 gears now because it stays in the powerband a lot longer. I lost some low end torque but I actually think that will help me launch with less wheelspin... The idle is kind of rough, it shakes the car at stop lights but nothing extreme.. You can still see out of the mirrors .

I'm happy with the swap..

You may need to adjust the IAC. Pull the connector out of the IAC, then adjust the throttle stop for the rpm's at idle. Then shut off the engine and plug back in the IAC connector. I am still playing with the fuel pressure regulator on mine. BTW, my track times are at a new track that just opened at the California Speedway in Fontana, CA. I ran a best of 15.495 @ 89.92 mph. 60' was 2.323. Unfortunately I was rejected at tech for not having a current proof of insurance, (mine was 4 months expired). I had to race home (67 miles round trip) and didn't get my first race in until nearly noon. Mid 90's temperature by then. Next Street Legal Drag session in a couple of weeks.

Not only that, but if you improve your 60 ft a little more, then you'll be into low 15's, and depending on the weather, maybe you'll hit 14's. Good luck =D

do you have a stick or auto? if you have an auto, a good convertor, somthing around 3000-3400 stall would prolly bring back a lot of that torque it feels like you lost. that cam is designed to put peak torque around 3200rpm in a 350 motor, so it is prolly slightly above that in the 305.

Honestly, I don't mind that I lost low end torque.. It actually makes the car easier to drive in traffic.. I don't have to constantly slow down so much now..

What are the numbers for the "LT1 cam"? Lift, duration, etc?
