Why so slow?

In CHP they have their My Generation Camaro with a '87 LG4 running 13.8 on Nitrous. Even after all their mods, they ran 15.3 without nitrous. How come their Camaro is so slow??? I don't think they changed any of the suspension which may have caused traction problems, but after all of those mods to their car, why is it so slow?? I know the cam they put in it really sucked any other ideas??

I don't know about your car... but my L03 with about same mods wouldn't be that good... Maybe that good... But i dont have a cam and rebuilt engine. And theirs wasn't a full rebuild. I think they just put in a replacement becuase it wasn't any special racing cam....

Well I looked again and they had 3.73; fuel pump and timing... also

Yeah its an '87 LG4 in their car, although it's not a L03, they're close to the same engine. They did everything it seemed but nitrous and they only managed a 15.3 at the track.

That is pathetic. My first car was an '83 LG4 auto. When it had a whopping 180,000 miles, I slapped a Summit cam in there and removed the mufflers. It ran a 15.3 @ 85mph! My opinion of CHP has been lowered.

No really eh. They even went with world heads and a crane roller cam and they ran 15.3@87 its upsetting that they couldn't squeeze a better time out of their camaro. What racetrack were they running at?

They run all their test cars at the Los Angeles County Raceway. All their times are corrected to sea level though. I guess their test engine (a L03 with a carb) doesn't make near the power our cars do. Imagine that! Some other car came from GM making less power than the L03 I think I have heard 140 HP stock from the carb. Still, that is alot of doing for a 15.3. I have simular mods, except I still have stock cam/heads/gears(2.73 granny gears) and I run in the high 15.2's. Does seem a bit slow for the mods.

Mods:
Edelbrock TES Headers, REALLY high flow cat, 2 1/2 in catback flowmaster, 160 stat, hypertech chip, MSD ignition (rotor, cap, superconduct. wires), Bosch quad4 plugs, Edelbrock TBI Intake, Ram Air Box's twin snorkel, all TBI mods, no smog stuff, no EGR, lots of suspention and alignment upgrades.

Fastest e.t.:
15.28 @ 89.42mph
Fastest 60 foot:
2.113

Makes me feel good. I have my stock guts and still running a 14.69 and 60 footers at 1.93 on regular street tires. all I have in it is like $1000 or so. I thought it was awful for an lo3 but maybe not...

Erock...what are your mods? Is that on the juice or just straight motor?

305,
Your mods are the same as mine. The only difference is that you have suspension mods and I don't. I did add a powertrax locker though. I forgot to put up my sig. Here it is. I know that it was not a fluke because I was running and dialing it in the same all day. Even in the 1/8 mile I run every time down between 9.43 and 9.47.

you can't really "re-jet" the carb on the LG4, just change the secondary metering rods and hanger. It's a simple 2 second deal. I think they're still running the stock intake. I have all the mags. I'll go back and look for sure. But they did do a full rebuild, put in a new cam(one I don't like, but still) there are some problems going on on the tranny dept or something. 15.3 is pretty ****-poor with a rebuilt motor w/ better heads and a better cam than factory. If it doesn't have an intake and headers, it needs them in a bad way, along with a shift-kit, and a custom chip. I ran a 15.7@83 before I put the 350 in the 87, and the engine was on it's last leg.... literally, she died a week later. Too bad I never ran her w/ the 350 killed way to many 5.0's and LT1's to not know what I ran. I'd guess low 14's, I think high 13's is a bit optimistic. none of those races were 1/4 mile long, maybe an 1/8th(stop light to stop light.)

previous ride: 87 Camaro LT
350, A4.Comp Cams 268H, Edelbrock Preformer intake, Hedman Headers and y-pipe, gutted cat, No AIR/smog pump. 14x3" Open element K&N, Q-jet w/ D hanger and DA rods, adjusted AV spring tension and quick can.

Current ride: 1992 Camaro RS, K&N, Flowmaster, 305, T5, Black, T-tops, 84k miles.
