Clicking

I just noticed that when I step on the gas I hear a ticking sound. It gets faster as the RPM's go up, and sometimes does it at idle. What could this be? The car still runs great but this noise is kind of distracting. Thanks.

Its probably your lifters. Its commonly called valve ticking, but you lifters are the ones doing the ticking. When was the last time you changed your oil?

Hey TAZ, about those lifters.......do u just tighten them to stop the clicking? I have the same problem, when my car is cold and i step on the gas, the clicking starts. But once my car is warmed up, the clicking will stop. Does this sound like the lifters too? Thanx!

sounds like the lifter but tightening them won't help. They are dirty. Try running STP and see what happens. Heavier oil helps too.

Well I just got my oil changed 2 weeks ago, so that shouldn't be the problem. What should I do to fix this because I hear this mostly at idle, and is it serious? Thanks.

I was just under the hood and because I have the 14" open element I heard a sort of very faint "breathing sound" coming from the throttle body. It was very faint but it sounded like someone snoring. Could this be part of the problem? If its not, then what can I use to fix this clicking at idle sound?

Does anybody know what this is and how to fix it? This is getting kind of embarassing when it just starts clicking at idle and in park. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like the lifters to me. You will have to change the lifters. It's not a hard job just time consuming since you have to take off the distributor, TB, Intake manifold, valve covers and pushrods.

There are some things you can do to maybe fix it before you pull them. Like putting some transmission fluid in the oil. Or adding STP.

If you heard it coming from the TB, then it could be your injectors. The noise injectors make has been described as a clicking.
This is normal, unless excessive.

Put some ATF in the oil next oil change. It has Additicves that will help clean them out.

Also check for an exhaust leak, most likely at the head/exhaust manifold mounting point. Tighten them suckers up.

i've experienced the clicking on a ford pick up at work, it was the exhaust manifold.

Thanks for all your help guys. I will check for the exhaust leak, but for the STP thing, is that just the Injector cleaner/carb cleaner that you add in your tank?

NO! Its thick honey like oil treatment. You put it in your oil. Get the right one. STP makes lots of stuff. Don't put injector treatment in your oild and oil treatment in your gas!

Snoring sound - normal with an open el.

Ticking - probably exhaust manifold bolts loose, i've heard of this before, and mine is doing it i think.

Ticking - old injectors.

My fuel injectors are brand new ACD's and they are loud as hell. I think they are "reverberating" in the larger plenum of the Holley Pro-Jection intake. Everything else is the same.

Yes the open element filter is LOUD. Whenever I do major mods to my van I drive with the dog house (engine cover) off and lemme tell ya, that thing is deafening.
