High Idle problem

My car suddenly has a vey high idle, we are talking in the neighborhood of 1500 to 2000 rpms. when I am in gear it is almost like I am using cruie control. Above the 2000 rpm range the car runs fine. When the clutch is pushed in, the rpm's go up instead of down. Only mods are open element, catback and pullies. Any sugestions

Thanks

check your throttle make sure its not sticking you know check the obvious first
If all that checks out check your pipes are they really black like the car is running rich. Check your tps but if your tps was that much out of wack the comp should and would have set a code
I would check the throttle. Do you have after market pedals cause they dont like our cars gas pedal they stick to the side of the tunnel sometimes.

Check the throttle blades, check the IAC to make sure it isn't stuck open, then make sure you don't have a vacuum leak. Those are the most common reasons for a high idle.

i had the same problem when i put my chrome valve covers in. Seems that i broke the 4 wire harness leading into my IAC, and i had to jerry rigg it for a week till i got a new pigtail harness. Its on the passenger side on the botton of the throttle body.

I've noticed the same thing after I started exhaust mods.

Does the idle stay high or come down slowly?

Assuming everything in the previous posts check out. It can be normal for your idle to stay high for a few seconds and then drop. You have alot more air going through with your exhaust, and your ECM/O2 sensor may be compensating by raising your idle.

Sometimes my idle will hover at around 1500rpms for a second and then slowly go down to normal range whenever I shift out of gear.

Thanks for the suggestions, I am going to check all of those things today. So far the computer has not set a code.

On my drive home tonight, which is the first time I have driven the car since my post, I noticed that the high idle conditon was still present when I would push in the clutch. Then if I tapped the gas pedal to rev up the rpm's the car would then fall into its normal 650 rpm idle speed. Do you think it is my throttle sticking or something else. How should I go about fixing it.

Thanks

I have somewhat the same problem. when I start my car up cold, it will idle high, any where from 1000 to 2000, when it normally idles at around 550. it only does it cold though, once the engine warms up it's fine. and like was said before, if I tap the accelerator it'll drop beck down, sometimes. what could cause this? I recently rebuilt my TBI and tried to adjust the TPS the way the chilton manual says to, but it didn't seem to work the way they said it would, so i just tightened it down, other than the idle problem it runs fine, and no check engine light. (unless it's burnt out, but a burnt out SES light?)
