Broke Piece Installing Headers LO3

On the passenger side between the two rear spark plugs I broke this sensor. My temp gauge hasn't worked since. Assuming it was a Temp Sending Unit, i went out and bought one though it didnt match what i took out. I put it in and it still isnt working. Right before I came home from installing it, it suddenly turned on and read presumably correct. When i restarted it, it didnt work again. Can someone tell me from my horrible cell phone pic if this is in fact the temp sending unit? I included the pigtail that i cut off (Left). The part i bought is NAPA part #TS6641SB Thanks.

On the passenger side should be the fan switch. The temperature gauge sender is on the driver side.

Here you can find a 195/185° on/off fan switch that would be a good upgrade he also has the connector.

Re: Broke Piece Installing Headers LO3

You did indeed break the fan switch. The sensor on the right is what you need. Note however, that in that pic the protective plastic tube that goes over the prong has broken off. The first time I bought a new fan switch sensor that cover gave me the impression that I have the wrong sensor until I realized that I had broken it off.

Re: Broke Piece Installing Headers LO3

I replaced the Fan Switch with napa part FS111 and i had them order me a pigtail for it, napa part FSC10 and its not comming on ? One thing im suspicious about is that the pigtail box says "compressor fan temp switch". It went on with no problem. I originally thought it was my Temperature Sending Unit and hooked up the wire to a new TSU from napa, could I have messed something up? I checked the fuse which i belive to be a 20amp in the No. 4 spot on the fueblock and it was fine. Any ideas?

Re: Broke Piece Installing Headers LO3

i read somewhere on here if i turn my AC on and the fan doesnt kick on that the relay is bad, but it turned right on so now im gonna have to investigate my wiring by my switch. Shouldnt the fan have turn on when i grounded the Green W/ White wire off my Fan Relay?

Re: Broke Piece Installing Headers LO3

220° is really hot, you sure you got the cooling wather over 220°? Since fan turns with AC on you can always cool it that way in worst case.

It can't be the temperature fan switch because the switch is on the drivers side right under the exhaust manifolds. Follow the white and green wire to it

Re: Broke Piece Installing Headers LO3

One thing to double check on these fan switches, you are not supposed to use teflon tape or any type of sealant, the switch body acts as a ground. If you used any that may be why the switch is not working. I don`t like to "muscle" any threaded parts in the block I may have to remove so I just used my rtv and used a small hose clamp around the sender and ran a wire from it to ground and the switch works fine.

Yes, you're supposed to use sealant, or the threads will leak coolant. Sealant doesn't prevent metal-to-metal contact for grounding, it only fills in gaps in the thread.

Re: Broke Piece Installing Headers LO3

I didnt use any teflon tape or sealant. If i ground out the pin in the pigtail the fan comes on. I let it get up to 230 sitting in a pakring spot and it still didnt kick on. I asked some guys at my shop and they're pretty clueless too. Wonder if I could have gotten a defective switch? Good thing I hooked up my manual switch or id be SOL. Id find it hard to believe the switch is defective but its the only thing i can think of.

The gauge may have said 230, but was the temperature actually 230?

I believe its accurate, it took awhile for it sitting to reach 230. I dont really wanna wait to find out though either.

Re: Broke Piece Installing Headers LO3

You can verify the temperature though aldl or other scan device. From my past, third gen gauges aren't that accurate.
Since the fan doesn't kick on when you manually ground the pigtail, then the sensor wouldn't be the defective part.

Re: Broke Piece Installing Headers LO3

SMKTRS, the 210-200° fan switch would be a better upgrade. 195-185° one keeps the fan on all the time even with 180° thermostat. Im going to change my 195-185° soon. I tought the 180° thermostat would fix it but it did not. Hope this update is not too late.

I would like to get a lower fan switch in the future but for now I'm just trying to figure out why this one isn't working. Ive got a manual switch now so i just keep it on most of the time. Thanks for the input.
