TBI bored over?

What would be the difference in hp if I bore over a tbi, is it worth the $200.00 price tag? The car will hopefully already have a chip.

Re: TBI bored over?

Boring an engine enlarges the cylinder by about the thickness of your fingernail.....you think that will make much of a difference??? It will only increase your displacement by a couple of cubic inches and is worth way less than 5 hp.

Just the act of boring is only one step in the rebuild process, if you do the engine right your are looking at near a 1000$ if you do a lot of the work yourself.

Put your money into exhaust and forget about the mail order chip.

Unless you've done all the other modifications(i.e. bigger cam, better flowing heads) I don't think you'll notice much of a difference. Just my opinion.

Even then the gains are minimal at best. Boring is something you do to clean up the sidewall of a block during a rebuild, nothing more. One of the strong points of a 305 block is the thick sidewall that you can practically purge of coolant through overheating and not warp (I know I had a cooling fan issue and did it 3X).

And like it was stated earlier save your money on the chip for something worthwhile, all it will do is dump more gas in a prayer for power increase. The only way to get more power through the ECM is to do a custom tune.

Re: TBI bored over?

custom tuning is something i do not know how to do, according to what I hear, the chip adds about 17hp, a bored over tbi adds about 15 and a muffler adds about 20, thats what i hear around here, thats probably nothing compared to what you guys are used to, but again my expertise in a car's tuning is next to none, so I got to take what I can get, lol.

I thought he was talking about the throttle body. Either way that alone won't gain you anything, and boring a throttle body bigger on a stock engine will create more problems then its worth.

I totally agree with this statement. A larger than stock TBI on a stock engine is a headache. It will mess with the AE, TCC, PE, etc. The stock TBI is not a real appreciable restriction, up to 310 GFWHP. If you plan to go bigger, I would skip straight over the bored small block unit for a BBC or Marine 2" TBI.
