Shift Light on Automatic Electronic Trans? Few other ??s
Shift Light on Automatic Electronic Trans? Few other ??s
hey, I was just reading FAST new thread... did'nt want to clutter it with questions and not info...
is it possible to make the shift light flash, even though you have a automatic, instead of a manual trans? the shift light in the cluster.... I just thought that would be cool, to see when the electronic trans was shifting...
or is that just a stupid idea? and how hard is it to do?
the reason I asks, is because when i pulled my cluster, I remember seeing that light, and a couple others, like day time running lights, etc... is it even possible for the pcm, to enable these features??
is that day running lights even programmable via pcm? cause i run my lights all the time...

Re: Shift Light on Automatic Electronic Trans? Few other ??s
Im also curious to know.
However, i will be converting from auto to manual. The dash is not originally from my car, (i have an 87 formula, this is an 89 GTA).
Can the shift light be made to use as a race style shift light? How was it supposed to function from the factory?

i have an 89 auto as far as what i know and have read theres no light on autos but the arrow is there mine didnt have a wire on the dashboard connector since the same connection goes to the TCC lockup in autos they use the same pin on the ecm theres an option what signal goes to that pin in the chip either TCC or shift light. its wont flash for gears for us since our trannys are not electronic controlled only the lock up is. I switched to a 140 mph speedo and i figured might as well put a light in there since its an empty space and i like lights
i used an extra bulb socket and wired it into the TCC so when the computer commands lockup it lights. as far as a racing light its not super bright but i think theres a setting in the chip when to turn it on by rpms its set lower by the factory to tell you when to shift for better fuel economy

that would be awesome but the light would flash fast since the shifts are fast maybe a second or 2 and theres a control module for the tranny and i believe theres a seperate signal for each gear change you would have to build something to send each signal to the light i dont think you can just tap into it i wish theres was a number display and it would show what gear ur in instead of looking down at the shifter or if your in drive.

ahh it cant be that bad on a auto.. plus it will only last like 1-2 sec... that would not even bother me, Ill get used to that quick.. it will be cool I think. Or maybe a toggle switch if it gets old?
yea, still cool though, and 1-2 secs is about all I need it to light for anyways... my shifting tables are modded... my truck could hold a gear for half a block almost... its shifts like a truck... so it would be so COOL to see it light up, them FEEL a FIRM SHIFT with it...
I think my PCM has it all built into 1 box... I may just end up asking my tunner Alvin about this... but not untill I revisit for my final tune...
yea, I do also, I had the thought like couple months ago, when i took my cluster apart... to make changes to match my new engine....

Re: Shift Light on Automatic Electronic Trans? Few other ??s
I doubt PCM for less would know about this as myself and others here on TGO are the ones who reverse engineered the TBI PCMs.
There is a shift light routine in the PCM, but it shares the 3-2 solenoid output, and is intended to tell you when to shift your manual. You could do it as you described, but it would require some additional code to the routine that handles the desired gear number. Basically it would come down to turing on an output when the gear number is incremented or decremented. Another method to get cool blinking lights would be to hook LEDs up to the shift solenoid outputs. Would be sort of useless, but youd have two blinking lights.
And, dont bother using PCM for less. If your looking for the place to get it tuned, TGO is it.

but then, like you said, I would have to know the software to, to make new strings... I just didnt know if it has been done before...
maybe in the future I get a extra pcm I would give it a try, once I start tunning, with tunning hardware and learning the jift of things... on the software side of things... which prob is only going to take me a short time...
but I just wish I had the time to play with this stuff, every single day...thanks for a straight up answer...

Re: Shift Light on Automatic Electronic Trans? Few other ??s
Actually, just programming it in would be easier. The code in the PCM is relatively easy to modifiy. If you know how to program in assembly, you could do the change in around 20 minutes. Would be a matter of turning a free output on or off whenever a gear change is commanded. Either looking for a change in the gear # or a change in state of the shift solenoids within the software would do it. Then just have some form of a timer to decide how long you want the light to stay on.
If you really wanted to be high-tech, you could even add a paddle shifter to allow you to manually change gears. Just would have to add some extra logic to prevent you from accidentally downshifting too far.

ohh ok... thanks for that bit of info. do you mean assembly, such as C or C++? what type of script is it? I really dont want the light to be on that long, but if its like in the micro-seconds... then yea.. i want it to be 1-2 secs or so maybe 2 is good...
dont some shift kits, convert to manual as well as keeping the auto feature?? i know the 4l80e transgo hd2 shiftkit does... maybe its one similar for the 60e... ?

Assembly is basically formatted machine code using pneumonics to help you remember what the machine code represents. Although some portions of the PCM appear to have been done in C, I dont have a decompiler, so Im stuck in assembly, which does have some advantages.
Heres what assembly looks like:
----------
Yeah, but this would require no mods to teh transmission. You could just hook up a wheel with paddles and have a manumatic when you want, or have it just run as it did before as a full auto.
Heres what assembly looks like:
Code:
;
;~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
; New edges have been detected
;~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
;
LE364 PSHB ;Push max allowed period to stack
LDAB 3,Y ;Load timer to wait for TOS signal
BEQ LE37B ;Bra if ==0
;
TAB ;Get delta pulse counts into B, delta pulse counts
;= [(RPM x 40/60) x (elapsed timer/65536)]
CLRA ;
ASLD ;x2
ASLD ;x2
ASLD ;x2, now x8,
FDIV ;65536 x [8 x (RPM x 40/60) x (elapsed timer/65536)]/
;43946, now = RPM x (elapsed timer/65536) x 8
LDD 6,Y ;Load captured free running counter value
SUBD 1,Y ;Subtract counter val., one delayed, now time between
;calculation interval, which is secs x 65536
XGDX ;Swap revs into D, elapsed time into X
FDIV ;[RPM x (elapsed timer/65536) x 8] /
;(elapsed timer/65536) = TOS RPM x 8
STX 4,Y ;Save result, TOS RPM x 8 Yeah, but this would require no mods to teh transmission. You could just hook up a wheel with paddles and have a manumatic when you want, or have it just run as it did before as a full auto.

when I did my 1990 conversion, used a 7747 ecm and stock suburban prom and my shift light works. however it signals a upshift at certain rmps in 5th lol.

ok, hey i can get you a decompiler man.. and a new copy of C... just give me a few days to find it.. could you decompile everything in the PCM? I get what you are saying about the manumatic... this must be what they are doing with the newer model cars... (auto & manual).. i dont however like that feature too much...
about the shiftkit, i think the hd2 does do it on the 60e... im gettin mine done for free, i just got to buy the shiftkit; i meant to do that same week of the rebuild...

Its already pretty much done is assembly. Also in assembly you can decrease teh time required to execute code due to having no overhead and taking advantage of certain tricks.
Also, why dont you tune it yourself? There is a lot more info here on TGO then they likely have for your PCM, so youd get a better tune in the end, not to mention that itll be way cheaper.

im going to tweak and change the PCM4less tune, as I decide to change things in the feature... like you said, the little tricks, for my ecm... I really like electronics and stuff like this... its ashamed im not tunning already...
im NOT stoping here man! trust me
... I have even been talking with local shops asking if they would like to go into a tunning biz.. I could offer GM tunes as such... I already have 2 guys wanting to invest into dyno equipment.. bays, etc... believe me Dimented; im going to be tunning soon... I learn at a fast rate too. as I am a engineer in the computer field, as well as electronics... as soon as I start datalogging, Ill post what I "paid" for in my dyno tune..
then we can all critique it....

Y'all are over-thinking this...lol
Just get a bulb and connector and hook it up to an MSD rpm activated switch.
After my interior is done I'm doing that.
