305 tbi fuel pressure question

i recently replaced the fuel pump which was replaced with a medium brand from the parts store. since then, while driving, the car shuts off and will not restart until after about ten minutes. it idles and runs fine. there is no egr and codes were checked. it did flash a lean mixture. the sensors and connectors are clean. im curious where to look first.
i have a 30 psi fuel gauge from summit i was going to put in on the hard fuel line under the tbi. will that work there? anyone here done it ?

I recently installed a gauge in the rubber line between the hard line that runs along the frame and the hard line that goes up to the TB using a tee purchased from Jegs. Just make sure you install it on the pressure side and not the return. In my case, fortunately it was the upper line.

In case you're interested, I'm getting ~11psi at idle.

that looks really good there. exactly what i was wanting to do. it appears that there will not be enough room up on the rail above the valve cover so this is an easier solution.

Here's a company that manufactures a gauge fitting (#62-fp) that fits between the TB inlet and the hard line. It makes for a nice clean installation. The only thing for me is you can't see the gauge unless the air cleaner housing is removed and you'll pay $30 bucks or more for it after tax & shipping.

I didn't pay that much for the entire setup I have and it can be seen by just opening the hood. Here's the fitting and the gauge (white face 30 psi) I purchased from Jegs. I'm sure Summit will have something similar.

I'm sure you could also come up w/ a configuration for installing the gauge in the hard line that runs along the valve cover.

Let me know how it works out.

Re: 305 tbi fuel pressure question

did you use 1/2 inch fitting or 3/8 inch fitting?

Re: 305 tbi fuel pressure question

3/8ths.

The upper line is the supply line and where you want to put the pressure gauge. At least on my car. But just to be certain I had:
  • disconnected the negative battery cable
  • disconnected the upper fuel fitting where the flexible line meets the hard line below the alternator and placed a container to catch the fuel
  • turned the ignition on
  • and just touched the the cable to the battery
This allowed me to watch the separated fuel line when the fuel pump runs for a couple seconds when the ignition is first turned on. If fuel flows from the flexible line coming from the frame rail - you've got the right line.

I attached a picture from CFM-Tech's site that shows their fuel pressure gauge adapter w/ a gauge installed on the supply side of the injector pod.
