fuel filter question

What all do you have to do to relieve the pressure in the fuel lines for a TBI engine to change the fuel filter? I have been told to first take the gas cap off to take the pressure from the tank, but is this the only thing that has to be done or is there more to it? (I'm sure this question has been ask before but I couldnt find anything using the search button)

Re: fuel filter question

you could pull the fuel pump fuse or undo the relay and let it run until it stalls..but tbi isnt under much pressure to begin with so. Let alone i believe it doesnt hold pressure after you shut it down? I could be wrong on that part of it though..

Re: fuel filter question

when i did my fuel filter there was fuel coming out from the line going to the tank the whole time. i still don't know why the F it was doing that. and yes i did remove the filler cap maybe i should have removed all the pressure..

but, since it took me rather long to remove the filter and install the new part, i would roughly guess that 5 gallons poured down, i caught it all in a container and poured it back in the tank after doing the filter

Re: fuel filter question

On a TBI setup the fuel pump pressure bleeds off quickly. It is a good idea to loosen the gas cap to relieve any pressure build up in the fuel tank. The real problem is that the fuel siphons out once the line at the filter has been opened.

With the filter lower then the tank this is why the fuel just keeps on draining out. Not much can be done about this except to have the fuel level as low are you dare (on 'E') for the filter change.

Don't forget that there is an O-ring on each fitting and the filter is directional. Arrow points toward the driveshaft.

RBob.

Re: fuel filter question

OK thanks for all the help I think I'll run it down to a quarter tank before i try it, and I'll have something ready to catch the fuel in.

Re: fuel filter question

As long as you got your new filter under the car with you, so you can swap it quickly you shouldn't have to worry to much gas leaking out. Replaced my fuel filter with a full tank and lost maybe 1/4 gal.

Re: fuel filter question

I haven't done my fuel filter yet, so maybe I'm missing something, but couldn't you just buy a rubber plug or cap like you would for a vaccum line? If its not pressurized it seem like that should be enough to stop the leak.

I'm pretty sure you could. But its not necessary.

Re: fuel filter question

Even if you don't mind losing a little gas, why make a mess in the driveway? I'd have some vaccum plugs handy, or at least a bucket, although it sounds like some people are losing more than a bucket full.
