Engine Combo, How accurate is Desktop Dyno?

Hi there Guys. I've been a lurker here for awhile, trying to soak up as much as I can, especially in reguards to fuel injection ( old dog trying to learn new trick ). I don't have a Camaro, etc, but the vehicle I'm working on does have a Gen1 SBC, so thats the reason I'm here. The vehicle I'm working with is a 4X4, 3600lbs, 350 SBC, Granny low 4 spd ( 7.05 1st gear ), 3.70's w/35" tires. What I want is a pretty strong torque motor, which for my purposes is in a LOT lowwer RPM range than what you Guys build for. I just got Desktop Dyno, have been playing around with it, and was wondering how close/realistic it was compared to real life. Using a 350, stock low perf heads, 600 w/ dual plane man, headers w/muff's, 9:1 comp, I've ID'd 3 cams that would fit the bill, with a strong flat torque curve in the RPM range I'd be 99% of the time. #1- Crane Energizer 260 ( 366 ft lbs @ 3500, 110 LC ), #2- Isky 256 Supercam ( 108 LC , 363 ft lbs ), and #3- Lunati 255 High Efficency ( 364 ft lbs, 110 LC ) . At present the setup is- 350, 3932454 heads, Edelbrock EPS man w/600 Holley, small tube, full length headers w/turbo muff's, and a noisey Comp XE 4X cam ( 210/218 .447/.462 111LC ). Future plans include a TBI swap. I have a set of 305 heads, casting 376450 with the larger valves, 160 cc ( aprox ) ports, and larger 60-62.5 CC chambers. Would these work for this setup? As you can see, speed/HP is not my main goal, just a good responsive torque motor. Do you see any flaws in my plan, am open for suggestions. Thanks, Al Moderators, thought I was in Engine Forum, Please Move

Is the engine currently running in a vehicle? I'd be surprised if your present Comp 210/218 cam didn't give you a strong bottom end. If it's installed on a 106 or 107 ICL and properly tuned, ie. plenty of low rpm spark advance, I don't see a reason to get a different cam.
As for DD, it's usually pretty good for the type of setup you're considering. It underestimates the rpm band by about 500 with some of the short runner manifolds like the late model LT1's.

Thanks 86 for the reply. The Comp XE does allright, but it seems to me to be a noisey cam, especially since all the valve trains fairly new ( 2006 ). I'm aware of the downgrading of the zinc in the oils today, and have used Delo 400 since install. Yes its in a running vehicle, drive it to work a couple times a week, and run around in it on weekends. I get 17" at idle, you think this cam tame enough for a TBI swap, or would there be alot of tuning involved? I know I've got alot to learn re: EFI, but thats where the challange is. Got'a stimulate the grey matter . Thanks, Al

Re: Engine Combo, How accurate is Desktop Dyno?

Those XE lobes have some steep ramps, so it's expected to put more noise into the valvetrain than milder lobes would. The aggressive lobes are a good thing though: the seat-to-seat timing is less than a milder-lobed cam with 210 @ .050, and thus will give better low rpm manners and torque than the lazier lobes will. The only thing you MUST have to make it work are good valve springs. What springs are you currently running and at what height are they set up? Seat pressure?
I'd say it's well worth any tuning involved. Look for some posts by Fast355; he could help you with the TBI tune.

Re: Engine Combo, How accurate is Desktop Dyno?

Not really sure on the springs, etc. Thats kind'a why I mentioned the head casting #'s on both sets. With the 376450 castings, I've gathered from some of the dirt track forums- 160-165 cc ports, 1.84 intake valves ( measured ), 62.5 cc chambers ( could open up some if needed ). Seems like it would build velocity with those ports/valve sizes, could freshen up, and add new springs. Casting # 3932454 ( on the motor now ) , Mortec lists as a truck head, and used on 307's. Not alot of info on these. Thoughts? Al

OK, then your number 1 priority right now is springs. You may be pleasantly surprised with just that change. There's a good chance the valves are bouncing off the seats right now and losing some cylinder pressure if you're running stock-type springs.
