Who put the spark plugs there?
Honestly? You have to do 7 of them under the car.. I think the person who made this should be put in prison, with the man who invented the flat head screw..

Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
there are plenty of 4 cylinder cars with the plugs on top where they are easy to get to. I'll take my 8 cylinder with awkward plug placement any day! It's a great excuse to buy headers. I have very reasonable access to mine from above with headers and no a/c

which is according to my current knowledge in most cases more related to the presence of TWO over-HEAD cams

no changing plugs without putting on headers hehe. plus headers minus emission stuff minus a/c make things a lot easier i suppose..

Even putting the wires on was a job.. Took me like.. 45 minutes to sort out where they went, put the fireproof covers on, and set them up.. I used Taylor 8mm wires too, $20 at a swap meet.. Sweet.

Consider yourself lucky, at least with the manifolds they can be changed without removing the exhaust. With some shorty headers, to get the plugs out, the headers have to be removed.

We also have no business complaining if ever talking to a 4th gen f-body owner. Those engine bays are PACKED! I believe changing plugs on those has a book time of over 6 hours. Imagine paying the bill for that?

Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
not that bad. the 4th gen v8's are a lot harder. we pulled an a/c compressor off of my buddies trans am to get to them easier. The tranverse gm's are a little tough. The hardest are probably the mod v-8's in mustangs and trucks. especially the ford vans. the thread strip really easy too.

Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
What kinds of headers are there out there that make reasonable easy access to the plugs? The headers on my car right make it extremly difficult to get to a few of the plugs while a couple it's very easy. Any headers out there that would make easy access to at least most of them?

Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
changing plugs on my car sucks also. I have headers also, so you you can't use the regular sparkplug socket, it wont fit between the headers. The only solution I had was to take the socket and cut it down just above half way so it could clear the headers, and still fit over the plug. Then I have to use a box wrench on the top of the socket to loosen them up. I remember seeing a company somewhere online that actually made these for 4th gen cars but wanted like 20 bucks for it.

Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
I just use the normal plug socket on the plugs it will fit. The others I have to use normal wrenches that are big enough o fit around the plug. It works, but very time consuming.

Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
3rd and even 4th gen plugs are EASY. If you want difficult go with some of chryslers FWD V6 engines (pull the plenum to get the back plugs). 5.0 Explorer (put it on the rack, pull the inner fender liners, and fight it with a wobble). Also my 97 Chevy Express van (rack, pull t he inner fender liners, and use a 2ft extension) was a pain.
Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
I got all of mine from the top with shorty headers.
Also 1982TA do you have regular plugs in yours? If you put in header plugs you might find that you can use a regular spark plug socket.

Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
After I yanked out the AIR junk on mine, I found I could reach 7 of 8 with only mild shoulder dislocation
. I hope to get all 8 without jacking the car once I replace the headers.

Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
I miss doing plugs on my Camaro. Thanks to the headers, I could do a plug swap in 1/2 an hour with a box-end wrench.
Now I'm stuck with the GTP and they aren't kidding about transverse v6's. I have to pull the engine forward and pull the O2 sensor (or get reallly creative with the wratchet and adapters) to get at those back three. Now I know why it still had the original plugs in back when I got the car at 80k miles.

Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
I had Edelbrock TES haeders on mine, couldn't fit a ratchet with the socket on it, had to slide the socket over the plug and use a 3/4 box wrench to turn the socket. Could get all but 2 from the top.
Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
Changed mines not long ago and were a freakin pita to get to. I have slp headers that were in the way for #6 & #8. Used someone advice about cutting the plug socket in half and using a wrench to turn the hex nut side of the socket to get em off. What a pain.....the new ones were a pain tryin to get started. Poor engineering on those slp headers that came with my car.

Haven't tried these, wonder if they work, suppose to make changing the plugs easier if you have headers.

thirdgen plugs get consecutively easier as you own the car longer, more **** flies out of the way the better it gets to know you.

Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
Atleast your not in my boat.
When I bought my car they had left the long plugs on and put the TES headers on and I can't even get a socket on them. I had to break them and then put the short ones on. My 83 was easy with longtubes and no AC or emissions and I could get them all from the top.
Talk about hard try a V6 Fiero and getting the back 3 plugs, easiest way to do it was by laying a board across the plenum and the trunk and laying down and working blind.

god, thats the problem i had today, i have the TES headers and regular autolite sparkplugs from the previous owner, and i was only able to change 2 sparkplugs, and thats which a slightly shorter socket. im seriously thinking about purchasing that short sparkplug socket that SLP sells for changing sparkplugs on F-bodies
Re: Who put the spark plugs there?
Mine are all easy to change i have Hooker shorties and i have a special wrench where its skinny enough i can take a socket and get the wrench in there and the wrench was about 4 dollars at harbor freight.
