A few degrees of additional timing can help. More so if a higher octane fuel is used to keep detonation under control. With 8* if additional SA I would venture to guess that the engine is riding the knock sensor.
Either that or the damper ring has slipped and the timing isn't really what is being shown at the timing tab...

is that with the connector unplugged? i have my motor at 10.5* right now, not a knock or ping and thats on 87 octane. I have a brand new damper so I know its right.
