Re: Will this cam fit?

not if your motor is a '90....'90's should have a hyd. roller cam factor. Yours is throttle body injected right??? Try looking at comp. cams computer controlled cams...I use comp cams xtreme fuel injection series....which you might check also....just go to comps website, get part number and go back to summit and get price. here is an example of xtreme fuel cam http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Ca...?csid=206&sb=0

The description... Hydraulic Roller-Excellent torque for throttle body 305 or 350. Good economy with added power...so this might work..these also use a 1.6 rocker..so you will need a set of those with this cam. I know these are a lot more expensive...but that's due to the roller cam.
But lift is a lot better.....550/.546 202/212 duration @.050 and 113 lobe seperation (better for computer)....That's a lot more lift and it should work in you car...but maybe not with stock heads..I don't know for sure...your overall best bet is to call comp cams themselves at 1-800-999-0853 and ask a professional. Hope that helps somewhat!!

Re: Will this cam fit?

Also, here is a page of exteme cams...less aggresive that the extreme fuel cams that might work too...read descriptions, and for sure call comp cams....you will need all the specs of your motor...intake type, heads, current cam, gear ratio, etc..and what you plan to do with it...street driven, mild drag race, road course, etc.....

Alright, thanks alot man, I understand what you're saying about the price, but I think camshafts have a pretty good power/price ratio

Re: Will this cam fit?

If you're buying a cam with more than about 0.480" lift, or 0.450" if you have 1.6:1 rockers, you're likely to have an issue with retainer-to-guide clearance. If you really don't want to pull the heads, you can use "plus fifty" valve locks, also called keepers, and choose some suitable springs. You should be changing springs anyway, they do wear out, just not visibly. While changing springs, check your valves to see if the stems are worn to the point of having a small shoulder at their previous maximum lift. If the thing ran 150,000 miles at 0.430" lift, and wore the stems to having a shoulder, then suddenly having over 0.430" lift is gonna create some problems. Don't forget new valve seals.

Re: Will this cam fit?

Yeah...it's the roller cams that cost a lot....make sure you get one that fits with your spring rates in your heads, computer and such....unless you want to change all of that out like I did..but that's way expensive....but do call them..they have a great tech line. Cams are a good way to spend money...but to see all the power you'll need heads, headers, intake, and exhaust!! The exhaust on third gens camaros SUCK BAD...I built my own with mandrell bent pipe....I'll try to get a pic for ya...anyways I felt the power difference with a full exhaust and muffler BIG TIME!! I used 2 1/2 inch up front, made a Y into a single 3 1/2 inch into a aero chamber muffler....It was such a big power difference it was almost stupid. To put it in another way, my buddy has an '84 camaro...was running mostly stock exhaust except for a muffer and tailpipes...he ran 13.9's to 14.0's at the track....he build a better exhaust (still kinda crappy in my opinion the way he did it, but..) went back to the track with NO other mods done except the exhaust and ran a 13.2...That's crazy better....just some food for thought there for ya.

Re: Will this cam fit?

As bad as the exhaust is, the swirl-port heads are hurting you more. I speak from long-ago youthful experience. Your stock heads with great exhaust, cam, etcetera can't reach 200 rwhp. Your stock exhaust with better heads, etcetera, can.

I was just thinking you could build exhaust less than getting a set of heads...I wasn't sure how much he wanted to spend...was just throwing it out there as an idea...

Re: Will this cam fit?

While the TBI will compensate for a good exhaust system, and it is a good idea, I'm not sold on it being less cost. Cheap new or good used headers and a cheap new or good used y-pipe will still run over $200, then another $150 to get a new Magnaflow 3" cat delivered, and another $200+ for a cheap new or good used cat-back, I've done used heads for less, and for another $100 you can either do new vortecs plus milling, or for about the same price, a complete used '96-'98 Vortec 350 longblock. It's bang for the buck! Of course, then you'll have even more exhaust wanting to get out. But even if you hook that to a stock LO3 exhaust, it'll still feel way stronger than an LO3 with good exhaust.

Oh, I forgot about the extra $ for a Vortec intake manifold.

Re: Will this cam fit?

Yeah, I get what you guys are saying about the swirl port heads, I am going to do headers first because if I do decide to swap in a 350 I can swap those over also and no money is lost, what I'll probably end up doing is getting some heads, probably the torquer S/R ones, considering that with those I don't need to mill them at all or get an expensive (vortec) intake manifold, though I'll be getting a new intake manifold, just not an as expensive one.

Re: Will this cam fit?

I hate to say it, but the fact is the 305Torquers suck. You can do better just porting LB9 heads. the torquers have a horrible short-turn. If you want the best 305-specific head, it's the TrickFlow 175.

Re: Will this cam fit?

yeah? these are them right?
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...28+4294791615+
I'm always confused on the sites where they advertise the heads for sale, I never understand if the price tag is selling the heads separately or together, here for example the price is $605, is this for two heads or one?

You say the S/R 305's are crappy, but they're still better than the stock heads right? But they probably aren't worth it for the money? something along those lines?

Re: Will this cam fit?

305 Torquers go for $760/pr assembled. They are better than LO3 heads, but even so, they need porting and polishing, especially in the exhaust ports. The intake bowls just need the short turn made into a radius rather than any abrupt edges. TFS 175s go for $1200/pr assembled. Just as they are, they outflow the best ported torquers. Your other non-vortec option, used LB9 heads plus porting, is the cheapest and gives the best bang-for-the-buck short of a Vortec 350.

Re: Will this cam fit?

How much are the LB9's? Would I buy them used or new? It's not that expensive to get them ported correct?

The L98's are an option too though correct? except they're probably alot rarer to find used which would be my preference considering their price tag

Re: Will this cam fit?

first - its one head. 2nd - why would you want to buy something made by the chinese communists? their quality control sucks - they get quota's and if they dont make their quota they get punished. so if they are 10 short that week and they have 10 heads sitting in the reject pile - do they allow themselves to be punished or do they take the 10 rejects and ship them out?
qc in china stinks for cast items - it always has. you take your chances buying anything cast there, no matter where it was finished.
we are talking about a country that still has slave labor camps and edicts from the central party to SMOKE MORE CIGARETTES because the country needs the tax.
want good aftermarket heads - go with something cast here. there is lots of quality control here.

Not true at all. The stock heads can support near 300 crank hp. (plenty of info on this site to search, including kdrolts sticky on heads). The stock exhaust is the first bottleneck for an LO3. The cam is the second. The stock exhaust is a crimped 2.25" set-up with some internal areas being around 2" dia. Headers to tailpipe need to be replaced with good aftermarket or custom mandrel bend system. A full exhaust LO3 with some form of modified intake (open air, custom CAI, etc) should hit around 200rwhp. The cam is what is keeping you from making more power, followed by the intake manifold, then followed by the heads. No to mention proper DIY chip tuning. No cam will be better than stock without proper chip tuning, in an LO3 that is. Agree with you 100% on the LB9 and SR Torquers.
