EGR Code/ idle issues.
Just picked up the car. 92 rs 305 tbi 5 speed.
The car will idle for a few seconds then die. Sometimes when driving it idles fine, others it just dies.
It is throwing a code 32.
I checked to see it the egr was opening , it was. Did the idle to 1200 push egr and see if it stumlbes, it did.
Vacume lines are clear.
Changed the egr silonoid. Did not change the issue.
Only thing left is to change the egr. Is that what I need to do?

Replaced the egr. Cleared codes.
Still doing same thing.
Now showing code 32 and 53 again.
Alt was just replaced and tests good.

Most of the time.
Does not seem to matter if it is hot or cold.
If anything it may happen more when it is cold.

Can anyone help?
This issue makes driving a pain!
Also, when it does idle, it is high, 900-1000 rpms.
I disconnected the vacum hose from the egr and drove it. No change.
It will idle for 15-20 seconds, then die.

Re: EGR Code/ idle issues.
ok have you wiped the codes out to make sure that this code 32 isnt an old stored code? Honestly sounds to me like this is not an egr problem at all, especially with all the tests you have already done

YEs, I have cleared the codes after every part replacement, check I have done.
After replacing the valve, I let it sit unplugged for about 10 minutes. Drove it home, did the same thing, unpluged ecm for about 2hours. Plugged it back in, drove it , same thing.

well the only other thing egr related would be cleaning the passages on the intake manifold, you can try pouring some seafoam down the passages as well as spraying brake cleaner down them.

Just does not make sense.
IT seems like the computer is opening the egr valve when the car is at idle. Even when cold.

I replaced the throttle body base gasket.
It is still doing the same thing.
Not showing any codes now though.

Re: EGR Code/ idle issues.
I am at a loss on this.
Can anyone be of assistance?
Any chance it could be the fuel pump?
It seems to run fine under load, at rpms, so I would not think it would be the fuel pump.

Re: EGR Code/ idle issues.
Try grabbing some starting fluid and spraying around seal of the intake & vac lines. (While engine running.) You could be having symtoms of a vacuum leak or bad intake gasket.
Also check fuel pressure if you can.

Checkedd for vacum leaks. Did not find any.
Have not checked fuel pressure yet, thats the next step I guess.

Checked fuel pressure. It is a solid 12psi.
Checked injectors. One was reading 3.4ohms the other was 3.8 ohms. Swapped one out, did not change a thing.

Re: EGR Code/ idle issues.
Maybe it's the IAC. If you can get your hands on a IAC tester I would do that and test it. If not you could try swapping it out and see what happens.

I have already replced the IAC.
I am thinking I may pull it out, and see if I can clean out the passage.

I pulled out the IAC and sprayed gumout into the ports. DID not change.
Checked again for vacume leaks.
None to be found.

Re: EGR Code/ idle issues.
Diagnosing a intermittent stall like this can be really difficult. Hang in there. Sorry I'm not much help. I do this stuff for a living, but without putting my hands on the car it's difficult for me to try to explain where to look or how diagnose a problem like this. There are some people on this site that are really good at this, but for some reason they haven't jumped in here yet.

Well,
It happens all the time. First thing in the morning, after driving all day, whenever.
SOmeone is suggesting the pick up coil... thoughts?

Re: EGR Code/ idle issues.
When it stalls you can restart the car, and it will do the same thing.
I have noticed, if you give it just a bit of throttle and hold it, at about 1200rpm, and watch the injector spray it will be a little broke up, then it will get a quick 'surge' and spray a good cone, then back to before, it will be a quick 'squirt' fuel pressure does not change when it does this either.

Re: EGR Code/ idle issues.
I just read someone else having this problem. Said something about a cold start injector? Also have you flow tested the injectors? The last post you made seems like they are not flowing at their correct rate, but on and off, just like your idle problem.

Re: EGR Code/ idle issues.
To my knowledge, only the early tpi cars had cold start injectors.
TBI cars do not have them.
I have not flow tested the injectors, but as stated, I replaced one with a new one,(there are only 2) and it did not change the issue. New injector does same as old ones.

Re: EGR Code/ idle issues.
Just in case anyone is actually following along with this, or for people with similer paroblems, I fixed it.
Turns out it was the distributer. The inside was pretty rusty. Pick up coil not working well.
Droped in a jegs replacement unit last night, and it runs so much better now!.
It idles so low sometimes I am not sure if it is still running.
Nice and smooth and quiet now.
