new to forum need help with camaro

i have tried searching and get 100000 different things, i just would like some simple answers thanks.

i have a stock 1991 camaro rs 305, and wanted to know what are some simple ways to make so quick HP gains?

i have only changed the filter to K&N and got new exhause 2.5 all the way back.

next i was thinking a jet or hypertech chip, what are your thoughts on these?

second underdrive pulleys, thoughts?

third intake, should i use a tbi intake or carb intake with adapter for tbi?

fourth fully roller rockers 1.5 or 1.6? thoughts?

i also want to do headers i have some shorty headers on had on my 88 305 will they fit the 1991 305? or should i buy new ones made for the camaro?

also will a gm p #17113079 pressure regulator make any HP gains? or will 30psi on a stock 305 only cause problems?

also will stock lt1 heads make any hp gains?
what are some cheap heads i could use?

after i do some of this will i run into problems with the computer not being tuned right?

Re: new to forum need help with camaro

there will be 5 billion answers to this question. But regardless my OPINION is start with an open element, ditch the factory intake setup...its like breathing through a straw. Next on the list is full exhaust, headers, ypipe and catback (2.5 is small, look for a 3 inch exhaust). Underdrive pullies did gain me a tenth in the quarter which was nice for a simple 40-60$ bolt on. Rockers are good but not right now for the money. No chip, learn to tune it yourself, thats where you will net the best gains. And as far as the intake goes, carb with adapter all the way.

Now if you really want to help this engine, ditch the stock cam for a stock lt1 cam. And as far as heads go, the stock tbis perform decently well under 4500rpm, porting them really helps and matched with an lt1 cam its a pretty decent performer. But head options are 081 tpi heads, 416 heads or 601 heads...lt1 heads will not work.

hooker 2055 headers into a 3 inch y pipe into your 3 inch cat into a 3 inch - internal - 3 1/2 inch external chambered exhaust. i suggest the 31 inch one.
zz4 cam with .474/.510 112
601 heads. drill the studs and screw in 3/8 studs, shave rocker guides. 8 1.6 rockers for intake 8 1.5 for exhaust. new springs that will take .530 or better - zz4 will work.
tpi map but you will have to drill the 4 center bolts to 90 degrees instead of the stock 72.
get back to us when you have that done and we will tell you some more.
knowledge is a hard thing to come by, you actually have to study it to think up your own ideas, or know what will workl and what will not.
there is this nice red line at the top of the page and the 5th word from the right hand border says S E A R C H. use it. another really good word is G O O G L E. that word works well too.
now pick one of the topics i mentioned and go to that board and start reading and when you come up with something you dont know search that word. eventually you will end up searching less and knowing more.
welcome to 3rd gen.

what carb intake and tbi adapter do you recommend? why go this way and not just get a tbi intake?

will a gm p #17113079 pressure regulator make any HP gains? or will 30psi on a stock 305 only cause problems?

Re: new to forum need help with camaro

There's only so much you can do to a 305 motor, without major chip tuning - and that becomes a lifelong endeavor to do yourself, and an even impossible scenerio to get someone else to do. I've been there, done that - ended up spending alot of money for no good end result.

You can do all the mods you like, and switch to carb (if it's legal where you are), and enjoy the mods quite easily.

But keep in mind - there's no replacement for displacement - a 350 really does these cars justice.

Best 'seat of the pants' mod is a better geared rear end - go to 3.42 gears and you'll have something you can really feel.

Re: new to forum need help with camaro

Headers has always been just about the best horsepower for cost mod you could do. You said you have some shortys , so start there. Only cost will be the gaskets. I don't believe you have any need for more fuel pressure yet, so "no"on the fuel pressure regulator for now. The Edelbrock Performer for 1987 and later heads will fit under your hood with a TBI adapter and a open element air cleaner. Underdrive pulleys would help too for not a lot of money, especially used. You can do all that with no chip tuning.
Here is a link to a adapter for putting your throttle body on a carb manifold.

Re: new to forum need help with camaro

are there any pros and cons about useing the performer tbi and the performer and tbi adaptor.

i can get a performer tbi intake made for my car for the same price as a performer and adapter. so if the price is the same what should i get?

i want to do only mods that i dont have to change the computer programing at all. so any mod that requires computer tuning is out.

I think you will get a little more out of the carb manifold and adapter.

Only you can decide that. But I think you seem to want a little more power with quick and easy mods, so in that case the Performer TBI is the easier one, because on the carb manifold you have to do a little fitting work for the temp sensor amd heater hose. Edelbrock TBI manifold is put on and go.

No computer tuning for this and an open element air cleaner, and your headers too. Put them on and go. However to reach MAXIMUM potential you would do some tuning. It is absolutely not neccessary though.
