83 305 Crossfire - Starts fine runs a bit and dies
Hello,
OK I have now changed about everything. New Plugs, Wires, belts, intake gaskets, fuel pump, fuel filter....
Car starts fine, runs pretty smooth since I repalced the intake gasket but it still dies after I pull out of the driveway. Does it about the same place at the bottom of our hill at the stop sign. Tank pick-up? The fuel pump was replaced just last year when I started this project. I didn't do the repalcement but had a local mechanic do that one. Since then I have done it all.
Thoughts? Anything. Also what shoudl I set the timing at?
Thank you.
Dan

Also take a look at the Technical Articles from the home page. Way down, under General Repair is an article on how to set the timing.
Have you checked to see if the ECM is throwing any codes? Is the engine warm or cold when it stalls? After it stalls, are you able to restart it right away?
If you start the car in your driveway and let it warm up, what happens when you depress the brake pedal?

Hi Dave,
Sorry just got home from Texas...
I will try the brake pedal test but here is what it has done so far.
I have repaired all the codes it threw at me for about a year so no codes any more. This has happened since I've had the car. Almost always I start the car, let it warm a bit, back out of the driveway and down the little grade to the stop sign. It either dies there or just as I turn the corner. It starts right back up with just a little coaxing and seems to run without incident again. Once it did happen when I was father from the house.
When I bought the car it needed a fuel pump. I had a local mechanic replace it because I didn't have the time to drop the tank. I should have done it myself. I told him I wanted a DELCO fuel pump and he replaced it with a carter. Brand new of course. I am not sure if there was a pick up on that ubit or if there was a special screen in the tank. Do you know? It seems to me to be a fuel pick up and delivery problem.

No problem on the slow response. The attached pdf is a scan of the fuel pump assembly from the 82 Camaro Service Manual. You should have the same setup. There is a "sock" at the intake of the pump.
Yes, it is possible that there is some debris or dirt in the tank that partially blocks fuel flow some time. Only one way to find that though.

Dave,
Thank you. I still ahve a miss in the engine that I can't figure out. I thought I had it with the intake gasket but no. I will have the mechanic who put the fuel pump in drop the tank and I WILL INSPECT IT MYSELF this time.
Man I wish you were closer but it's probably good for you cause I would be bugging you even more.

Even though you put in new plugs and wires, are you sure that they are all good. Make sure all the wires are securely fastened at both ends. What about the distributor cap and rotor? Are both injectors spraying fuel in a conical pattern in the TBI? Take the air filter off, run the engine and see what is going on. Rev it up with the throttle lever and make sure the injectors are still giving a good flow. Make sure the connectors are tight on the injectors.

Re: 83 305 Crossfire - Starts fine runs a bit and dies
I have the same car and setup, 83 crossfire injection. my car does the EXACT same thing, i lived with it for 3 or so years of it doin that, on cold startup it runs fine, warmed up tho and it dies, which is why i made it an art to drive with both feet, keep one on the gas pedal when i come to a stop to keep teh engine at idle otherwise it lopes slowly then dies. when i first came to this problem the ECM spat out codes, i dont remember them, but i was told the ecm needed replaced, i did that, and sadly i bought a faulty ecm cuz this one doesnt work or spit out codes at all. i replaced lots of sensors and wires, etc.. still duno what the problem is. so i doubt its the fuel pump. you think possibly its a faulty ecm or that round metal disk like thing behind the air breather on the passenger side on top? that one i havent changed out.

It's crazy!
The car is such a nice example of an original clean, fairly optioned car. Not one door ding and other than a little wear, great motivation for my 14 yo son whom I have promissed the car.
I have triple checked everything. I am taking it in to the shop maybe this week and let them fuss over it a bit. We will see. I sure hope we can get it figured out.
Thanks guys.

I have an 82 Crossfire and don't have this issue. Mine is not stock though. I would not think it is a fuel delivery issue. Otherwise, you would see the symptoms of a fuel delivery problem at other times as well, like when accelerating. Maybe try bumping the idle speed up a little bit?
Re: 83 305 Crossfire - Starts fine runs a bit and dies
I appreciate the thoughts as I am at a loss. Everything looks good so it's probably soemthing simple. I was suprised when I finally got the timing tab cleaned off so that I could read it. Different tab than any I have seen in the pictures.
The car will run but it has a noticble miss. I imagine when this gets resolved this car ought to run like crazy. It will spin the tires now without any effort and the funtional hood scoops are just plain cool. I take it in on Wednesday so I will keep my fingers crossed.

Found it! #1 plug had gunk on it from when I installed it..... OK, start the jokes.
Now the car runs pretty nice. I am getting a little surging in at idle and I wonder if th ethrottle shafts are worn? Anyon ehave ideas.
Car is tons better. So good in fact that I think I can hear a broken motor mount when I stand on it. Gosh that hood is cool when the vents open up. Always loved that even if it didn't do much. It is functional though.
Thanks.
