Tbi to Carb

Tbi to Carb
So I have little experience with motors and what not, but I just bought a 90 camaro rs with the 305 TBI. It's been through the works so I have no clue where to start, ive already replaced the distributor, plugs, and wires. For some reason lately its been driving fine but after an hour of driving it it wants to cut off and act up. When i go to crank it up the starter clicks and it doesnt turn over then all of a sudden it cranks right up...any ideas?
Now for the main thing, i want to change the tbi to a carb and ive been doing some studying, but i need a run down on what ill have to do from top to bottom, and what carbs work well keeping in mind that i plan on upgrading to a 350 soon.
Im in the process of removing the emissions now but i dont know what i need to remove or replace any help in this area would be appreciated too thx

Re: Tbi to Carb
look in the carb section and go to the stickies on top. everything you need to know. there is also a tech article on the home page in technical articles that also gives you all the info you need to go from tbi to carb, but just cause you switch doesnt mean your problem is going to go away.

I'd say an ignition module for first issue - located inside distributor under rotor button.
If starter rapidly clicks, then battery issue.
If starter just clicks once, then go through: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=38
Switching to carb, you need:
1) carb - 600-650cfm - this will feed 305 & 350 nicely
2) intake - most use Edelbrock Performer RPM or Performer Air Gap RPM
3) fuel pressure regulator - Mallory 4309
4) Vacuum advance distributor - any vac adv HEI
If an automatic:
5) TCC lockup method - read sticky carb forum
6) TV cable geometry corrector for carb linkage

Mkay, not really lookin for the carb to fix the problem so much as get rid of some of the computer mess, dont know much about them and the guy who had it before me didnt take care of the car so idk where to start with it, im about to go check the connections now i will update later on how that goes, thanks for the help keep it comin pls
the starter does rapidly click but would it run fine for a good hour or so before it started messing up if the battery were bad? is it just getting weaker and weaker?
and for last i would love a 5 speed instead of the automatic...but is it worth converting? dont want to have to do rediculous amounts of work. thanks for the input

Re: Tbi to Carb
hey i also thought there was a sticky or a tech article about solenoid problems on these cars when they got warm.
also switching to carb is some tuning to do on the carb and timing. lot of work. i just switched back to tbi from carb. should be 100% by next weekend. way better not worrying about all the other stuff. if you are not an engine guy it will pay off to locate and fix the problems and stay tbi.

Re: Tbi to Carb
5 Speed a no-no for a 350, so if a 350 is in the plans, skip the 5 speed. Could do a T56 6 speed, but the 5 speeds won't hold up to a 350.
You need to check local laws as well if considering a carbed car. Some states/counties you can get away with it, but many you cannot. And federally it's illegal, but feds don't do the inspections, so we don't worry about them. And remember - you carb it today, and you get a great job offer in CO, CA, NY, or many other states, and you have to sell it 'cause you can't take it with you!

i live in SC so no worries there uhh ok 6 speed sounds good but is it alot of work? This is more of a project i want to change to carb for easier adjustments, and i want to learn how to do everything, i plan to get a block and build the 350 but itll take time lol drove it for awhile tonight and it seemed to run well, put some seafoam in it helped run alittle smoother.

Everything is work. But no welding involved with a T56 swap. There should be a sticky in the tranny section, as well as many threads to
