What filter is better for my 88 Trans Am

I noticed the stock one has a ram air intake sort of thing going on http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4979125_n.jpg but i dont know if I should switch it for one of these http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...7610_30564.jpg Which will give me better performance i dont care about looks

Re: What filter is better for my 88 Trans Am

Hey thats my old motor! i remember taking that picture! haha(:
My picture you posted shows the stock air breather. That just has the filter inside

The second picture shows an Open element air breather. That one is WAY better for your car. More air into the motor, more power. I swapped out that motor in the picture for a 350,and when i did i kept the TBI. I switched to a Edelbrock Open element and i love it much better than the old bulky one. You can pick up one of these filters at auto zone for about 35 dollars.

BTW thanks for posting my picture, that makes me really happy i dont know why Lol

haha sweet! thanks bro. And also, the stock air breather on my car only had one vacuum line going into a sensor on the air breather. What you do is remove that sensor from the stock breather. Then the open element should come with a drop base that has a hole outlined that youre suppose to cut out. Then you put that sensor in the new breather, and connect the vacuum line. The other hoses on the throttle body go to other vacuum lines on the motor

Re: What filter is better for my 88 Trans Am

IMO,the open element in the second photo is the way to go.If your running a stock hood you will not be able to fit a tall one like this. Go with a 14.in x 3in. with a drop base and a 1/2in. spacer if needed to clear linkage. That should fit.If your still worried about it hitting the hood go with a 2in.tall filter.Any hose that you take of the throttle body must be caped off. They sell small caps at the auto parts store for that very reason. On mine its just one small hose in the front of the unit and the large breather hose that comes from the valve cover running in to the side of the stock unit. You will be putting a breather/filter(crankcase vent filter) in the valve cover hole that is created when removing the stock unit.

I have had the 14 x 3 open element with K&N for years. Works great. Wingnut just rubs the hood insulation.
