Cold air intake diameter size needed?

So after plugging my laptop to the ebl in the last few days i noticed that my IAT temperatures are reaching 135 degrees Fahrenheit. so i want to fab a CAI using the spectre single outlet hat...I was wondering if i should use 4" or 3" diameter pipes. I dont want the pipe diameter to be restrictive. Its a 305 bored 30 over with an lt1 cam, vortec heads edelbrock intake and hooker headers 2460 and tbi with ultimate tbi mods. Should I use 4" pipes or 3" pipes for a cold air intake? any answers are greatly appreciated

Re: Cold air intake diameter size needed?

you running a single bonnet or a dual bonnet? dual 3 inch is more than efficient. I think a single 4 inch would also be more than efficient.

Re: Cold air intake diameter size needed?

I think 4" tubing would be good you could always check with a vacumm gauge or datalog and see what your MAP is at WOT. Im thinking of doing this too.. I had an open air cleaner for years and it always runs like a dog now that its summer... and my IAT is high too, but on cool nights and fall it runs like a beast.

where do you plan on putting the filter? I was thinking about putting a scoop on the hood and make a hole to use that xtreme air lid.

Re: Cold air intake diameter size needed?

Yeah I need to pay more attention to my IAT temp. My car runs a lot better when cool too. But I figured it was because it was in open loop

Re: Cold air intake diameter size needed?

yeah as the engine gets hotter you feel yourself pushing the pedal down a little more and more to accelerate. and if your in traffic it shoots right up.. I took out the seal at the base of the hood to help air flow through. on the highway the temps go right back down.

I just live with it cause I like the look of the air cleaner and its easier to work on.. not fond of the carb hat look but the dual one looks cool, I might have to 'suck' it up and start my own quest for cold air..

Re: Cold air intake diameter size needed?

or datalog and see what your MAP is at WOT.
Key on engine off check MAP #. then do WOT and read MAP. Should be close to key on #.

I may have some 3.00 inch aluminum tubing and angled connectors from a cold air project. Interested?

Re: Cold air intake diameter size needed?

I def want a better and larger diameter Air intake, but I cant find any kits for swaping air intake stiles. My 5.0 In my RS has that restrictive small and flat stile intake, and temp is reach 104 down here in TX. I like the air cleaner look on top of the engine, but I need to improve my intake. How exactly?

Re: Cold air intake diameter size needed?

hmmm. They had stuff for the 5.0. but they were all truck and suv specific. like fore the blazer. Would it still work under the stock hood of my 92 RS?

I assume WOT is with the car under its own power, not just at a stand still (ie: Neutral). What's the P/N for that bonnet? It looks like it has a lower profile than the regular Spectre stuff I've seen. Not sure where my height is going to be with a Performer RPM, dctrumpets carb->tbi adapter and then the TBI. Mind you this is in a boxy Caprice, not a thirdgen.

Re: Cold air intake diameter size needed?

You buy the bonnet. then you buy the individual pieces to make the kit work for your car this is for the OP

Re: Cold air intake diameter size needed?

I bought bonnet off EBay $99 I recall. It stood 2.00 inch tall. Inside cleared injectors with two half inch spacers(aluminum). Nut on top is recessed/flush. I think it came in Spectre box. Check Summit as well.

Re: Cold air intake diameter size needed?

Cant believe I haven't responded in so long but getting caught up with school and starting a career really consumed my time. I ran a single bonnet with 4" diameter pipes behind the driver side headlights and removed the high beam bulb and added a scoop. Works great. IAT temps dropped dramatically and from what I remember from datalogging it isnt restrictive at all. I answered something pops in with the same question one day.
