L31's on my 305

Okay, so I have seen multiple posts on this topic but none really answer all my questions, one of my biggest questions is can I run the stock 350 tbi vortec intake manifold on my engine with those heads? And also on a little bit of a different note how much horsepower would I see if I used the 305 vortecs instead?
Thanks in advance!

Re: L31's on my 305

And how would it run if I were to put them on my engine with a thin head gasket and just left the stock cam in?

Re: L31's on my 305

yes you can but you will need to shave them down about 30 thousands to keep up the compression. should throw in an lt1 cam in it while you have it down that far. it will run descent. then get a tune and do the tbi mods with an open element. do an exhaust to.

Re: L31's on my 305

I already have an exhaust done, I still have the open element on my list of things to do lol, but with the lt1 cam, will the springs and everything be okay with that lt1 cam in the vortecs, and should I replace my lifters or push rods? Or will my stock ones be suffice?

you should be ok with the lt1 cam. but the springs are not much for a piece of mind.

Re: L31's on my 305

With the heads down should I still use the thin gaskets? And about what compression will I be at, and the shaving doesn't affect power output correct? Thank you again

Re: L31's on my 305

the combustion chamber is bigger on the l31 heads. if you dont shave them you will be lower compression which will result in loss of power.

Re: L31's on my 305

YOU NEED TO SHAVE THE HEADS. THEN USE THE STANDARD GASKET.!!!! PERIOD. then work from there.

Re: L31's on my 305

A thin head gasket to keep quench as close as possible to 0.040 in would be best.

Stock piston to deck of the LO3 should be around 0.025-0.035 in, a thin gasket like the Fel-pro 1094 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FEL-1094/ should be ok for sealing a undecked block.

I would skip the whole milling the 350 heads and get a set of 305 heads instead.

Yes skip the milling all togather and get a set of 059 L30 heads.

Well I already have the l31's =\, so mill them or thin gasket? Which is the better course of action? Thanks

Re: L31's on my 305

if its safer just to mill them, I'll stick with that, which would make it run "safer"?

Need to be milled to avoid a disasterous CR.

The thin head gasket is required to avoid a bad quench.

Not sure how reliable the 350 heads will be, once milled to obtain 56cc combustion chamber or less (56cc for around 9.25:1 CR).

There are plenty of online calculators, should start playing with them at least a little.

Re: L31's on my 305

Well, I wanted to just say this, after much thought, I am thinking converting to a 350 tbi would be a better idea and just getting the heads redone, figured I'd give everyone a heads up, I'm sure I will be back on the site with more questions at a later date, but Thanks to everyone who helped here!! =D

Re: L31's on my 305

350 ci is a good choice , now I'm courious why you would not use the L31 heads on it.

Re: L31's on my 305

Oh, I meant I'm gonna redo the vortecs and put them on the 350 with a gmpp vortec tbi intake manifold and do a mild cam :P

Re: L31's on my 305

I'm actually looking into this myself. Since I have another LO3 laying around, and don't want to spend too much money, but on the other hand the LS1 conversion will take me probably at least a year to save up for and shop around for parts (ie Ford 9 rear end, all the wiring, LS1 fuel tank, gauges, transmission, the engine)

So the 062 or 906 heads, can one use a gasket for a 305 or does it need to be the 350 gasket ?

Also on another note, can one pass smog with EGR if one converts to the MAF TBI PCM ?

Re: L31's on my 305

I know nobody has posted on this in awhile but i got some awnsers. vorgath. you have to use a 350 head gasket did this swap awhile ago and it was one of the issues that came up. meis Travis you have to use milled heads and use a thin head gasket. but doing the actual l31 swap is all together better. dont get that TBI vortec intake its junk compared to the edlebroock performer RPM thats made to fit up with the vortec head. that intake bolt pattern sucks of course. put a nice cam in there while your at it. the 305 peanut cam just use it for show peice. since you wanna go TBI you going to need to emulate your computer for a really nice tune. you can get over 300 hp from this swap.
