I have the 88 5.0 TBI, I am new to it so I'm not familiar with it yet so I'm trying to learn a little more on this engine.

But my current problem is when I put it into gear from (P) to (D) or (R) the car shuts off
I am at low PRM and it just shuts off automatically.

The guy who had it before me told me he had mess with the timming when he replaced the intake manifold ghasket.

I wanna know what the timmings for this engine are .
And I don't know how to time either my old school mechanic treacher will teach me but I would like to learn the bases.

 

To set the timing need to open the EST/BYPASS connector. It is located on the passenger side firewall (around the A/C box). It is a single wire connector that exits the harness to expose the connector portion then re-enters the harness.

Do this with the engine warmed up, and set the base timing to 0*.

If you disconnected the proper connector the SES light will come on and set code 42. Will need to shut off the engine, then reconnect the EST/BYPASS connector and restart. The code will remain for some time but the SES should then be off.

If the engine still stalls the IAC may be bad, or the ECM isn't getting the P/N signal from the shifter switch. The ECM needs to know that the transmission is being put into gear to bump the IAC open. This is what prevents the stalling.

est = electronic spark timing
ses, mil = your check engine light
yes you will need to use a timing light

soo i havent done the timing.. but i want to make sure what it really is.. when it warms up. when it goes from park to drive/reverse, it shuts off. help me out.!

 

it was the timming!
i fixed it and it runs like a champ!
