running very rich

Im having problems with my 91 305 TBI the car is running very rich and at first i thought it was my timing being off but when i did my timing i was right on the mark. this all started after i had to replace my intake gasket. its was an easy job. but now it runs rich and feels like it might be missing. I set it six advanced and it gave me some power but then it made it really hard to start. I have put alot of new parts on it, the coolant temp sensor, the distributor cap rotor wires plugs. the injectors look like there using more fuel then when they did before i had to replace the intake gasket. this has me stumped. any help will be very appreciated.

Re: running very rich

ok wow. is it running hot? did you bleed the cooling system when you refilled it. loosen the coolant temp sensor until it lets coolant seep out of it. this is to make sure there are no bubbles. did you make sure that you sealed the intake well and there are not leaks. did you restab the dizzy in the exact spot. did you leave a vacuum line off. is the egr sticking. did you put the wires back on the cap in the right place? very easy to do wrong.

There is your problem...."It all started after I had to replace my intake gasket". If it was good before and ran bad after, you messed it up. Time to start over. Check for vacuum leaks, look over every single thing you touched during the gasket replacement. I would start from scratch and set the timing to factory 0*. Worst case tare it all off and do it again the correct way. If it ran good before and now is bad after you worked on it.... well we know whats wrong.

Re: running very rich

I did set it back to o* i don't have vacuum leaks i checked for that. the distributor i put back in the exact same place. wires also. now im thinking EGR because when i took the intake off there was so much carbon on the EGR intake port that it was fully pluged. how do i check and see if the EGR is stuck open. and no the car is not running hot i kinda wish it was winter in michigan only place for spring and winter blizzard then rain all in the same day and i dont have much heat. coolant temp sensor burp did that first thing. another thing. when it gets warmed up the idle never comes down to 1k rpm its around 1.2k. could i have messed something up using some carb cleaner to clean up the TBI

Did you disconnect the timing connector when setting the timing?

Re: running very rich

disconnect the ESC wire right the little brown and black one on the passenger side yup i did that. and no no codes are being thrown. i did have a code go off when i first bought the car coming from the distributor saying it was not picking up a signal. so i bought a new one. and I do have a timing light and i did use it.

Re: running very rich

I know this thread is old now but i found the problem and you guys might be surprised to know the awnser. before i did the intake gasket i did a tune up on the car and i put a set of NGK R spark plugs. the car was already running not as good as it could so i wanted to give it a tune up sorry guys. today i actually took my cheap *** out to the auto parts store and bought the AC delco plugs that went to the engine from the factory almost 60 bucks but i gave it a shot. this car has never ran this well there is no miss my car can even burn the rubber off at 40mph its almost enough to make me cry. the car runs perfect. thank you everyone for all the advice.
