Bad Head Gasket?

So my 1989 Iroc has oil that comes out of the exhaust when it starts. It has the LO3 V8. In the past the car would only do like once every 5 starts but now its about all the time. I had 2 Subarus with bad head gaskets in the past and know how much of pain they are to fix. I'm just hoping this one doesn't have a bad one too. Could it be anything else?

Oil, or oil-smoke?

Either way, a head gasket is not at the top of the suspect list.

It is oil smoke that comes out of the exhaust. I'm hopeing its not the head gasket since that would be a big job.

I agree with the valve seals if it smokes only on start-up. If it were bad head gaskets, you would be having a lot more problems than smoke on start-up. You probably wouldn't be able to drive it for any length of time due to overheating. What color is the smoke?

Re: Bad Head Gasket?

Its a blue smoke that comes out. Last time it starred it left a cloud twice as tall of the after that it would only smoke when you rev the engine at mid RPMs.

Blue usually means oil smoke. I'm not sure exactly what your post says but if it smokes on start-up and at mid-range, you may have a bigger problem than valve seals. The good news is that it's probably not a head gasket problem.

Re: Bad Head Gasket?

well its not at lot when you rev it. its like a little puff of smoke that comes out but when its at start up the cloud is huge. But ill look into it more this week. today it didnt even puff smoke at startup to and from work which was good.
