Creating a reference site for TBIs
Creating a reference site for TBIs
Hello Everyone!
So one of my main goals in buying an older car was to learn as much as I can about cars and become as much of an expert as I can in my specific car. I've had a 91 Camaro RS 305 TBI for a few months now and I've decided to take a full systematic approach to learning. I'm going to break down the car into categories and then from there each part of the car, and then figure out what each part is, where it is, what it does, how they connect, etc, etc. I figured I could help out people who are also learning and get help from those who already know so I'm going to turn my personal reference into a wikispace for anyone to see.
Here is the site: http://thirdgentbi.wikispaces.com/home
Currently, there is absolutely nothing on it lol. My first step in my plan is to categorize the car and from there list each part in that category. It's going to focus primarily on my car, but should pretty universal for any thirdgen tbi.
I'm going to play this by ear and figure out the format of it as I go, but hopefully there will be people giving me feedback and I will process that either on here or a dedicated spot on the site.
All I have right now is the idea, but I thought I would make a post and hopefully grab a bit of interest so I get some feedback rolling when I start putting stuff up on the site. I'll keep you guys posted and thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Creating a reference site for TBIs
great idea for sure; i'd be willing to help out however i can.
one thing i've found useful with other engines that really helps new people is a set of pictures of a fairly stock vehicle, for locating components
such as http://shbox.com/1/component_location_views.html
that might be a good place to start
then you have that set of pictures all ready to rock for when you're writing up other stuff too, it'll come in handy.
for example it took me more than a few minutes just to locate the fan relay and the fan switch on my car with no pictures. someone less experienced may have not been able to locate them at all.

I'm gonna start with the engine right now because it seems like a pretty logical place to start with, I'll let everyone know when I have stuff posted.

You will be many steps ahead if you purchase one of these . I believe this is the right one. You may be able to find it cheaper but IMO this is an excellent price.
At the very least a Chilton's Manual if you don't have one yet.
Just click on the book.

You're a lucky guy, most of the time you learn by fixing/replacing.
Here's a link to a page I've found very helpful.

I will be following this.

Thanks Ron I'll definitely make that investment. I found a really nice youtube channel also just to give me the general basics of all cars as a nice starting point.

Nice,
I like the way you can add info. to any of the subjects listed at the right of the page , that way you can feed them with info when it arises.
Is this a community effort to contribute info?
If that's the case I would like to PM you some info on some of the subjects once and awhile.
If you want to use it great if not that's OK too.
I like photos/diagrams/exploded objects/etc. and have an archive with ALOT of information. If you don't use it in your project you might want to add some of it to your files.
