Won't start without starting fluid?
Won't start without starting fluid?
My car was in storage for about 1 year, now when I go to start it the engine will just spin over and not start, however if I spray a little starting fluid in it the engine will fire right up and run great, it will restart when hot but if I let it sit until it's cold it needs starting fluid again, any suggestions on what to look for? Thanks

Re: Won't start without starting fluid?
dunno about TBI [ I have MPFI ] but mayby if similar the FP isn't coming on till the engine builds oil psi. should be able to crank it 2-3 times and get oil psi up that way. If you can't build oil psi by cranking it over and have to use starting fluid, then id worry about more. Could be just the FP relay is bad.
IVe left mine broke like that on purpose, having oil psi before an engine starts is a good thing. Though people want instant start cars today. just 230K on motor

Re: Won't start without starting fluid?
Weird story; when i first bought my f-body i started having start up issues a couple months after. It would not start at all unless some Starting fluid was present. Well one day it didnt want to start at all with starting fluid as well, it ended up being my ICM. Im not sure how it was this, but it was.

Sorry I wasn't trying to offend you, and certainly wasn't trying to imply you didn't know anything about cars! Simply verifying, things are posted in the wrong sections all the time. The more I know the better I can try and help. I guess I have seen all to often a vehicle represented as one way and then come to find out that is what it originally was and now has this or that in it.

Re: Won't start without starting fluid?
im gonna agree with Gumby, if it starts and stays running by using starting fluid to get it going, then i would suspect a bad FP relay, and your not building enough oil pressure when cranking, could be a deeper problem
oil pressure switch acts as a back-up to the FP relay, if the relay is dead and the switch doesn't see enough pressure, its not going to start

Its just that if the motor can't build 7psi of oil pressure to activate the back up switch on it own [ by cranking it over 2-3 times], the engine is probably on borrowed time.
