I've got a spare throttle body from a 88-89ish firebird 5.0L laying around that I've been debating doing the ultimate TBI mods to. MY camaro is a 92 RS 5.0. I am trying to find out if these are the same throttle bodys or if there is any difference in the years.

They look the same as far as I can tell but wanted to try and verify before I do the mods and rebuilt the spare one considering mine has a ton of miles on it and the engine.

Also wanted opinions on even doing the rebuild on mine (200,000 +miles) spare (160,000ish miles) or just purchasing a fully refurbished one from online that already has the mods done to it. I remember seeing a company awhile back that sold remans like that. Thanks for any help.

 

Same unit, different sensors sometimes, I think the throttle position sensor changed or something like that. Not 100% on that, but I know that throttle body is the same.

Rebuild is super simple, just need torx bit tools, patience, and map out where all the screws go because they are different lengths. Not too much to rebuild to a unit like that, not as many parts as a carb, just need a little patience.

 

Okay thanks. I may just rebuild the spare then and swap sensors on it. Or at least practice modding it before cutting on my stock one.

 

No idea on Camaro TBI, but here's photos of my original '88 TBI compared to a later-model unit I installed on a K1500 pickup.

 

They're all the same unit except the TPS as 84redta said. I think around 90-91 they changed to the weather pack connector. Also the truck and car throttle bodies differ with their throttle linkage, be wary.

 

Ok if thats the case I should be able to work with the firebird one I have and just swap my TPS onto it when im finished.

 

Forgot to ask before hand but are the injectors and fuel regulator set up for the same specs between 88-92? I kinda assumed that would be the same considering the power output is rated the same.

Ok so I have finally mananged to get some free time to pull my original throttle body. I did notice that my throttle blades sit completely shut when your not opening them. But the other one Im about to install sits with the blades slightly open. so I got to looking at them and mine has a screw in the throttle body but the head looks like it is blocked off so you cant adjust it. but the other one isnt and it looks like it can be adjusted to close more or open more at idle.

So im assuming if I close the new one more at idle it will be fine to install. But what are the reprocutions of using it with the blades open slightly at idle other than a higher idle speed? Also does anyone know why this one is got the adjustment?

 

They are both adjustable, need to pop the cap out to access the screw. I also remove the screw and cut a slot in it to use a regular screwdriver in place of a torx bit.

Note that you will need some blue locktite, it is to be used on the three pod mounting screws along with the screws that hold the pod halves together. Engines don't like ingesting screws, it messes with their internal organs...

And yes Im glad you mentioned loctite 1 of my pod mounting screws was scary lose.

So the minimum idle air can be set.

For a TBI setup I shoot for 5 - 10 IAC steps at idle. Warm engine with no other loads on it.

Can also adjust the injector height so that the cone of fuel spray hits the sides of the bores just above the throttle plates. This is at idle.
