adjusting the TV cable on the TBI
adjusting the TV cable on the TBI
how do i go about doing this? my haynes manual says to push the tab in and then simulate full throttle and it ratchets way out... if i do it like that it shifts real funny but if i push the tab then slide it all the way forward then it shifts around 4300rpm and has more kick to it...is this right? what exactly do i do?
Adjusting the TV cable affects the flow (ie pressure) of the transmission fluid and helps determine the shift points.
Always better the have higher line pressure than too low, low pressure is bad for the life of the transmission.
How to adjust your Throttle Cable
To raise throttle pressure (raise shift points, and makes "kickdown" more responsive) move the cable housing towards the firewall (away from the throttle linkage), as you simultaneously depress the 'D' shaped button on the cable housing. Move the cable housing adjustment a small amount at a time (one "click"); a small adjustment can often make a world of difference. Naturally, to lower the pressure (lower shift points, and make "kickdown" less sensitive) move the cable housing towards the throttle linkage.

NO!!! Don't push the sheath all the way forward. That could cause your line pressure to be WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too low and you will fry your tranny in about 5 minutes. You should initialize the setting by presing the D clip, and moving the sheath forward, towards the front of the vehicle. This would ordinarily be bad BUT, you THEN have someone get into the car and mat the gas pedal to WOT and hold it there. Then, depress the D button again and pull BACK the sheath towards the firewall until you cannot pull it any farther. Then, let go of the D button and then let down the gas pedal. This is a good starting point to use to set the TV cable and you may now start using the "single" click method of final adjustment pf the TV cable. NEVER DRIVE WITH THE CABLE ALL THE WAY FORWARD!!! Not more than 1 foot!!!

ok what i did earlier was have a buddy floor the pedal...then i depressed the button and slid the sheath forward as far as i could...seems to be running fine now...if this what i was supposed to do? the other day i pushed it all the way forward without it being throttled...thats bad right? when i did it like that it shifted real hard but real soon...

Flooring the pedal and moving the sheath forward is the WRONG thing to do. You move the sheath BACKWARDS with the pedal flored to WOT. You may be lucky in that your bracketry allowed your adjustment to be ok but BE CAREFUL. If you have a high-pressure pressure gage (100psi+, preferably 150+) you can measure the trany pressure at the pressure tap port on the laft side of the tranny, about halfway back and halfway up. There are certain specs for D, N, R, etc with the TV cable at idle position abd with TV at WOT with engine idling... B&M Transpak instructions have the specs, go to their website and download the Transpak PDF file and study it, it also explains clearly how to adjust the cable.
