lo5, good idea?
If my car doesn't sell I'll need a 350 (i want a lt1 and a six speed but no money for it) I can get a 91 lo5, minus the intake and it needs a rebuilt. I want to swap the rear for a 3.42 posi, transgo shift kit, some sus., 454 tbi, will this get me into 13.5?

The L05 truck motor was 210hp / 310 ft-lbs. FYI, if you get the L05 truck motor you get a flat tappet cam, if you get the car version like the Caprice you get a roller cam.
I wish I knew that when I bought mine....DOH!
I think the heads are ok to port. I don't think your gonna make AS MUCH power as you would with aftermarket heads, but you said budget so there's my $.02.

I've built quite a few L05's with nicer/better heads and the mellow Edelbrock 3702 camshaft, Edelbrock TBI intake and nicer exhaust. This is/was waaaaaaaaaaay before my TBI/PROM days and the TBI trucks ran just fine because of the small cam and PROM from Edelbrock matched to the cam/intake/exhaust upgrades. Something like 265hp??? I cannot remember but they tout the package in the Edelbrock Ctalog. Maybe only like 245hp? can't remember. Long time ago.
Anyway, probably not what you want out of a car... The motor is solid and with a rebuild, you're good. You can just use a flat-tappet COMP XE-12 camshaft of proper sizing for operation rpm range. I don't think I'd spend a ton of money on a rebuilt roller-block and the roller-cam costs just to get roller cam. just my opinion.

I think if you check into it you will find that these truck motors HAVE the provisions for using a roller cam setup they just don't have the roller stuff.
IIRC you should have no problem converting the truck motor to use a roller cam.....
Get the casting number off the block and go to www.mortec.com to check it out for sure....

Well yeah. The block is '87 and later so it has all the millings for the factory roller cam, it just doesn't have the actualy roller cam in it.
I could get a roller cam and use the GM factory roller lifters and keys along with the big spring thingy that holds them all down.

Definitely go with a roller setup! Cheap extra power and you don't have to worry about cam break-in like you do with flat tappet cams. Check out www.goautocenter.com and check out the specials. They have several rollers for $80-$125. I'm getting one myself(either the ZZ4 or Hot Cam kit).
The Caprice 350 is a good motor, had one in my 91 ex-Cop car. I believe the cam has .415 lift on the intake and .430 on the exhaust. Throw in some 1.6 rockers and you'll wake it up. I know a guy around here that did just that with a 383 - 5 spd in a C1500. That thing was quick! Suprised quite a few people.
