ZZ6 Air Filter/Hood Issue

I just had a ZZ6 installed and the air filter assembly sits too high to allow the hood to close. Anyone else do this? Other than buying a different hood, how'd you fix it?

Re: ZZ6 Air Filter/Hood Issue

The ZZ6 comes with a high rise single plane intake. If the drop base air cleaner doesn't fit, you're looking at changing the intake manifold or the hood. Measure from the top of the carb to the bottom of the hood to see how much room you have to work with.

Thanks! I'm hoping the drop base air cleaner works. Not looking to buy a new hood...yet.

Re: ZZ6 Air Filter/Hood Issue

A drop base cleaner will not give you enough space. Your only options are to swap intakes(and lose power) or swap hoods. I have a fastburn 385 (zz4 with aluminum heads) with the same intake and the only way it fit was with a 2" cowl induction hood.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

On the plus side though, you have an AWESOME engine.

I'd already ordered the drop base cleaner before I read your message. I'm glad it was only $20...who'd you go with for your hood?

Re: ZZ6 Air Filter/Hood Issue

Rob, I have the equivalent of a ZZ6 in an 84 bird. I used a drop base, 2” element with a top element that is fiber. Use a piece of aluminum foil to make a tower - slowly close the hood and verify the room you have based on how the aluminum is crushed. My motor made 404 hp, 424 tq. 342 hp to rear wheels. The motor was built on the same basis as the zz6. I also made a strut tower brace that was close on hood clearance - but it works. Good luck - I can send you a picture of the setup if you think you can use it. Byron

Please post those pics.
I was going to try to make the 305HO dual snorkel air cleaner work with the QA1 3 point strut tower brace, but I'm abandoning that plan and just going to use an open element air cleaner instead. With my ram air hood, I should be able to use an oversized (taller) filter. I might even be able to isolate the air cleaner from the hot underhood air.

Thanks Byron. I think I'm going to go with a 2" cowl fiberglass hood. I'd like to keep the air filter element that came with the motor.

I have a Goodmark 2" steel cowl hood, weighs a fair bit though. There's plenty of good glass hoods out there too.

Thanks! Just ordered a 2" fiberglass cowl hood from Unlimited Products. Since I had to buy another hood (because I didn't feel like cutting my steel hood) I felt like going lighter.

Re: ZZ6 Air Filter/Hood Issue

No emissions - here are the pictures of my 84 SE. The motor is identical to a ZZ6 - I was not aware of the ZZ6 until after this motor was built and delivered. Made 404 hp, 424 tq. The Strut brace is homemade - 1" pipe. If I recall correctly, there were 13 different angles. I used a flat hood as I did not want to distort the "Bird". The hood/fenders required a bit of adjusting, however, the hood fits well. byron

Looks great Byron. I bought the cowl hood and should have it within a few weeks. I wanted to stay with a flat hood, but I wanted to use the ZZ6 filter and top more. Definitely would've been cheaper with your set up.

I like the fabricated strut brace. I'll be looking into one in the near future. Rob

Re: ZZ6 Air Filter/Hood Issue

Thanks for the pics. Very nice. I love the STB. Have you ever tried to see if the factory dual snorkel air cleaner would work with it?

NoEmissions - have not tried dual snorkel. This car should have been crushed, however, now that it is done I am well pleased. Drives, runs very well. Thanks for the comments. Byron
