TBI information
I was looking into buying a new 3rd gen camaro and I found a 1991 camaro z28 which has a 305 TBI motor. I was looking for a TPI motor because thats what my friend has and I just kind of like it...
What is the actual difference between the TPI and TBI? Is there a huge difference between the two HP wise or durability or anything? I haven't heard much about TBI so I would like to know its flaws and good things about it.
Thanks.

a 1991 z28 should have a TPI not a TBI. TPIs are more complicated but come with better heads. The TPI is a more complicated unit so repair costs can be higher. TBI's were put in millions of GM work trucks because of their simplicty, reliablilty, and low maintance costs. The intake on a TBI will look like a trash can lid and the TPI intake looks like a big metal spyder humping your engine.

Tas, you got that from my post way back when. Check out the following link and look near the end of my post.

you dork, not even I take credit for that funny
I forget who originally called it a metalic spider humping (not metal spyder humping) learn to spell tas.
As for the z28 with TBI, that's bull unless it was an engine swap to a downgrade! All 91-92 z28's got TPI.

The car is 1991 and it has a TBI motor, as much as you guys don't believe me it actually is a TBI. I was shocked too and asked the dealer but he isn't a very smart person.

If it has a TBI, you are looking at an RS, someone could have changed the badges. As far as TBI vs TPI, the TBI loses big. My Firebird book rates the '91 TBI with 170 HP. The power for the TPI is 230 HP (5 speed), 205 (auto.). The torque also falls short by about 30-40 ft-lbs.
As far as their mechanical differences, a TBI uses 2 injectors, the TPI uses 8. The TBI setup is like a carburator, it injects fuel into the top of the intake manifold. For the TPI each cylinder gets an injector and the fuel is injected directly into the cylinder.

Car: 2000 Trans Am and a 85 Iroc-Z
Engine: The Mighty LS1& 305 just beat meTPI
Transmission: 4L60E and 700R4
Well the TBI is a good unit in my eyes not as "cool" as the TPI but still good. As for losing "BIG TIME" at take off yes, but take a TBI at speed and you'll see that it can stay with a TPI car. The shorther runners help it out a lot.
As for the 91 Z28 having a TBI nooooooo way my friend someone switched the badges on the car, don't pay for a TPI pay for a TBI don't let the dealer screw you. Lates

Ok, well I decoded the VIN number and checked everything out and the dealer was trying to scam a RS as a Z28... thanks for the heads up guys!
