it all depends on how much room you have under your hood tell us stats on your car... 305, 350 and i'll guess it is a TBI since you are here... camaro, firebird ????

If you have the 305 you can get away with a 10" with a 3" element (if your running a stock engine or a slightly modified one).

If you are running a 350, then you should go with the 14" and a 3" element.

Goto the K&N's website and there they have a conversion for top RPM, engine size and what size filter is needed for the proper air flow.

(I'd post the link, but I'm at work and the link is book marked at home!)

Later,
Mike

Get a flat bottom air cleaner if you can. Then you can ditch the spacer.I am using the Moroso 14x3" Flat Bottom Racing Air Cleaner Part#65911(with a K&N Element)$47.99 from Summit Racing.
Eliminated the spacer and clears the hood with Edelbrock Performer TBI Intake Manifold (1/4" Taller than stock).
Drop base air cleaners will work also, but you'll have to keep the spacer in there (I used a 14x3" drop base w/spacer for years).

mine was $17 for their chrome flat based 14" x 2.25" with no lettering on the lid. Nice and clean. I got a 3" K&N when I found the right height for my car.

I'm using a drop base without the spacer ring. I also have a completely different setup than most people so it doesn't really count. I did have to bang the crap out of the base just to get it to fit around the IAC and TPS plugs. Since my intake is taller and I'm running with the adaptor plate I didn't have the problem with the base resting ontop of the coil.
The $15 Summit Racing 14x3 drop base air cleaner works for me, I'm sure it'll work for you.

ight cool

its a camaro 305 TBI
i want to do some mods cuz its killing me to do nothing, but i'm so poor its not even funny... hahaha
the car payments are enough for now... but i could afford say, 20 bucks for an open element...

so with the non drop you don't have to do anything to the spacer or anything, just drop it on....
btw, my car is stock, no intake mods or anything like that.... YET.....
so, for my budget, what is recommended???
thanks fur puttin up with my ignorance
hahaha

I use a Summit Non drop air cleaner, 14x3.

I removed the spacer ring (it's tack welded on usually, though mine basically came off on it's own) and relocated the IAT (sensor that is plugged onto your aircleaner) to the rear wall near the A/C stuff. I suggest removing the spacer because this way air flows from every side better instead of just downwards like it is the case with most drop base.

I also had to make the air cleaner stud longer which I accomplished with a screw I sawed the head off and trimmed down to about 1in. and a coupler I cut sown to about 3/4 of and in and got it to the right height. I did also have to trim some threads from the oringinal stud so it would fit better. Some people have been able to get the ait cleaner on w/o extending the stud, and some invert the cover.

I'm attaching some pics of the stud as well as the aircleaner installed. I have to thank Nevermore for the original idea on making the stud

Here is the stud, since I caould only attach 1 message to the post

BTW, I know the engine looks really dirty and rusty, but the car sat in someones back yard for over a year before I bought it and is definately a work in progress

Make sure that you keep your stock set-up, I dont know how it is where you live but here in So. Cal. emission testing is extremely strict. I just found out last night when I took the wife's Astro van for a smog check that my camaro will not pass the visual w/ an open element air cleaner. So I guess it is a good thing that I saved my stock set-up. I will just switch to the stock set-up when it's time for testing, not that big of a deal (only a 10 min job). Well worth the hassle.

Yeah, me too.Had to get CA smog in January.Put the stock air cleaner on it, passed smog, put the open
element back on that afternoon.
Ten minutes every two years is something I can put up with.

Vaccuum Line

I put an open element on my 305 Tbi but i left the line chillin, i put a little filter on it because my idle went down when i pluged it so i decided to leave it unpluged. I am runnin 16.4 stock exept for open element. If i plug the line will it help my time?

why would anyone run an open air element?

you know your sucking in hot air off the motor right? we all know motors hate hot air..........get yourself a ram air box with dual inlets from http://www.ramairbox.com/.........on some years it takes a little modifying to get both hoses routed..the passenger side is a bitch since the battery and lower radiator hose are in the way........but where theres a will theres a way.....call em up theyll tell ya what ya need......i got a 14x3 lowered base with hoses and clamps for 195 including shipping........thats a bit pricey but i think its worth the colder flow ill get........i have this setup and when i get the ram air ii hood im going to let the inlets cool the motor instead of hooking them up to the tbi .........

I put one on my car last year 14x3 flat base. I took it back off and put the stock cleaner on. I went to the track with the open element. I didn't gain anything at all, I even went a little slower. That's on a pure stock engine mind you. After I do some mods this year I might give it another try, but I'll probably go for a cold air setup this time for the formula hood.

i just like the look of the open element in mine ..

Im watching this thing on speed vison for the Tornado, i dont know what to beleive anymore .. lol. A little metal piece that takes 5 min to install and spins air gives you 10 more h/p. Whatever.

About that ram air box WASP brought up, I wonder if its really good cause i want to make a ram air system using my hood ..
