question about junk yard finds.....
question about junk yard finds.....
ok. I found a place close to my house and they have about 5 or 6 thirdgen camaros. most of them are the older sc's but thats cool. I found a rear end out of a camaro that came stock with a 2.8 v6 manual. it should be a 3.42 right? it'll be an open rear end but from what I understand you can purchase a take off gear from SLP that will make it possitive.... he wants 125 dollars for the whole rear end assembly.... good deal or not????
also, i found springs off of a 91 Z28.... just the front ones though (the back of the car burnt). would it be ok to put these on the front of my RS (came with F41 suspension package) but leave the stock springs on the rear... good idea or bad???
he wants 20 bucks for the pair... i think thats a fair price???
thanks

$125 seems a tad high. Ask the v6 board guys what gears that should have. Hard to say about the springs. Do they look beefier than yours? Doing front springs is a big job it might not be worth it unless you put in some quality springs and/or struts.
well unless the car is an 82 model then the standard rear gears for a 6 cyl. manual is 3.42 if its an 82 then it'll be 3.23... either way that'll be a nice change from my 2.73's.... you think 125 seems high??? i could probably talk him down some... i thought that sounded pretty good....
also, won't the z28 springs be a big change over the f41 that came on the RS...??? thats what i've always thought... i could be wrong however, i've been wrong before... not often though

I bought a 3.23 Posi disc rear at a garage sale for $50.The guy actually apologised for selling the sway bar off it earlier.
I see disc brake posi thirdgen rears in Northern CA for less than $150 frequently.

the best places to go are U-Pull-It's. you can usually get a complete rear from drum to drum for under $50. my local place say "Third member, minus drums/disks $36" since the drum arte only $5 each, you can see what i am saying

I was goin to use the same posi from slp but come to find out they use 28 spline axles and your rear has 26 spline so thats out the window. Hope that helps.
All you need to make any axle work ( thirdgen that is ) is to get some 28 spline axles from the same salvage yard. If it originally had 26's and you want to use the slp take off posi all you need is the 28's. Now your ready to RUMBLE.
our cars all have 28 spline axles. there is no need to do any other shopping, you already have the axles you need. all the bearing and teh housings stayed the same, just the spline count on the end of the axle changed.

88 and up is 28spline axles.
not all V6's are 3.42 gears. most thirdgens are, but not all. in the 4th gens it is much more common to find 3.23 gears in a V6 that to see 3.42's. 4th gen rears are also wider than thirdgen rears, so your wheels will stick out further.
just go to the salvage yard and look at teh RPO(the little 3 digit option codes), you are looking for one that says GU6. in camaro's teh codes are in the console box and on birds the codes are on teh lock box door in teh hatch.

we do not have a reluctor ring on our cars, the reluctor is used on teh 4th gen vehicles equiped with anit lock brakes, it will not apply to our cars.

Guys be checking the axle splines because on the '89 RS that I had even the Auburn book said that it was the newer splined shaft but after buying a posi and getting it apart it was not.
I think that GM just used up what they had of the older axles and when they ran out thats when you would get a newer style.

ok so now back to me....
if i go to the junk yard and purchase the entire rear assembly, axles, gears, carrier.... the whole deal... would the slp gear work or not??? i'm confused.... and is there any other option to make it posi if that won't work???
i need to buy the thing anyway cuz its a 3 series carrier and I have a 2 series (2.73) so even if I choose to buy a 3.73 posi setup i'll still need the carrier right???
ok... i'll just leave it at that for this post...
but i have more questions... hahaha
thanks....
