Wide Open Throttle

About two weeks ago I was driving in my car and the throttle, I guess, got stuck. It was like I was Driving at WOT but the pedal was all the way up. I got the car to die, and now when I try to start it, it revs past red line and what stop. I don't know what the problem is. I have an 86' Camaro 305 carb. I was told it could be the automatic choke but I don't know how to fix it or test to see if that is what it is. Does anyone have any idea's?? I really need to know so I can fix it and then sell my car. By the way about how much would a 86 z28 basically stock, with everything working right and a fresh coat of primer sell for??? I was hoping at least $2500.

check the throttle return spring next to the carb. I'll bet is broken,

I don't believe that the choke would cause it to go wide open even if it was messed up.

Well if that was the problem is would not stop doing it until it was fixed correct. I went out there the other day and inkered with the carb a little and got it to run right until the next time it was reved high again. If it was the throttle return spring then it would have to be replaced in order to run correct again??

I would say make sure there is no kink in the spring, but you said the pedal was still up. So I doubt it, but couldn't hurt to check. Happened to me once and man was that some scary $hit. I don't see an open choke causing a car to redline, idle a little higher yes, but not redline.

Well I just went out there and played with the automatic choke a little. I pulled it towards me and pushed it away. Is it suppossed to be really loose??? It was very very loose. Then I pulled the throttle the spring looked good and it went back to place. Then I started it and it ran fine. I took it out for a drive drove fine for about two hours. Then I put it in nuetral and gave it a rev, and it happened again. I really need to find out what the problem is, any ideas???

try wiggling the throttle linkage in the carberator. shouldn't be much movement. if there is, the throttle body will need to have some new bushings pressed in and the throttle shafts replaced.

As for value, having the car in primer makes the condition either fair or poor. According to kelly blue book:

"1986 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Coupe 2D

Engine: V8 5.0 Liter
Trans: Automatic
Drive: Rear Wheel Drive
Mileage: 100,000

Equipment
Air Conditioning
Power Steering
AM/FM Stereo
Alloy Wheels

Consumer Rated Condition: Fair
"Fair" condition means that the vehicle probably has some mechanical or cosmetic defects, but is still in safe running condition. The paint, body and/or interior need work to be performed by a professional in order to be sold. The tires need to be replaced. There may be some repairable rust damage. The value of cars in this category may vary widely. A clean title history is assumed. Even after significant reconditioning this vehicle may not qualify for the Blue Book Suggested Retail value.

Trade-In Value $820
Trade-in value represents what you might expect to receive from a dealer for this consumer owned vehicle. Keep in mind that the dealer must then absorb the cost of making the vehicle ready for sale, advertising, sales commissions, arranging financing and insurance and standing behind the vehicle for any mechanical or safety problems.

Private Party Value $1,550
Private Party value represents what you might expect to pay for a used car when purchasing from a private party. It may also represent the value you might expect to receive when selling your own used car to another private party. "

rochester carbs require special tools & service procedures to work on.

might try swapping out your current carb with a used salvage yard one. not too big of a job, there are four large bolts to remove and the accelerator linkage to pop off. is a good chance that a carb swap will solve your sticky throttle issue.

on topic of value, there is a certain minimum value that a running car sells for. around me a running car that looks decent and has no major mechanical issues will usually get a minimum of $500. In some parts of the country, such a car will fetch around $1000.
