TBI to carb, won't start

I followed the tech article on this site that explains all the steps to convert to a carb but I must have missed something.

This is what I have:
92 camaro, 305 was tbi, hei distributer, holly 600 carb, edlebrock performer rpm intake, mallory fuel pressure regulator ( 4.5 to 9 psi)

I took the computer out and noticed that the fuel pump wouldn't stay on after turning the key so I had to put a switch in to keep it on. It hold at 5.5 psi now.

I checked for spark at the plugs and I am getting good spark from all of them. I take the plugs out after cranking the motor for a minute or so and they are soaked. It seems to crank pretty slow too although I tried putting my truck battery in there and it cranked the same way.

Anyone else run into this???

A novice guess but what's your timing set at? Either that or the carb's air/fuel ratio is set too rich? I'm sure more people will be able to elaborate on this. Good luck.

I checked for top dead center and made sure that the number one plug was lined up. I am not a mechanic but I thought if I dropped the new distributor in and pointed the vacuum advance port towards the passenger side this should be good enough to get to a rough idle.... or at least get a few sputters out of it. Right now when I crank it it turns over but doesn't even try to start.

It sounds like a timing problem to me. You want to have cylinder #1 at top dead center like you said, but when you put in the distributor you want to make sure that it's going to have the rotor point towards cylinder #1 on the cap. This should be enough to get the engine running and then you'll have to advance it with the timing light. It sounds to me like you either don't have the rotor anywhere near cylinder 1 (you might even be 180 degrees off,) or that it's too far advanced.

You would think that the distributor is 180 out in your case.

Also check the firing order of the spark plugs and make sure they're right.

my guess is like everyone elses the distributor is 180 off and double check the spark plugs wires to see if setup right

Same thing happened to me and it was the timing. Have someone turn the distributor counterclockwise to advance the timing and see if it starts (do this slowly). Also, check and make sure the wires are on the distributor right. I think its
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!!

You're right about the firing order.

I tried turning the distributor with no luck. I also checked the firing order and that is correct. The car ran fine before I did the change I am really stumped here.

The only thing I can think of that may have fouled things up was I had the carb hooked up without a pressure regulator for a while before I found out that the stock pump gives way to much pressure. Could this have caused any damage to the carb?

Wouldn't that only affect the needle and seat?
