I'm not entirely sure, but I think all 406 heads sucked ballz. I belive they were all somg heads, and flowed like crap. You might want to save for a set of Fastburns or Vortecs if you cant afford the fancy-shmancy aluminum heads. Do a search on here for people with those heads and see what kind of power they are making, I think there are a few people running 400's with those heads.

i am partial to afr the single most power part you can add to a engine besides a blower turbo nos is the cyl head everbody puts all there money in to the engine and neglects the heads i would take a 305 with afr heads over a 406 with junk smogger heads just look at all the fast cars and i guarantee they all have a good set of heads on the car

i couldn't afford expensive heads either. i think the #on my heads is 993. iran 13.4 @105 mph with the stock heads and a .447 lift cam. they'll get you by till you can save your money.

I'm using 186 double-humps with bolt holes on my 400, with some mild porting. They came on 69-70 Impala, station wagons, Monte Carlo, and other higher-horsepower applications.

Yes, you need the steam holes, you can drill them yourself. Lay a 400 head gasket on the heads, mark them (6 per head) with a punch, drill with 3/16" drill until you hit the water jacket, which is about 3/8" or so deep.
