Replacing distributor

On a '89 TBI car, can you replace the distributor with a vacuum advance one to eliminate the esc and effectively the knock sensor as well? Will this set a code?

I understand that, but isn't limp home mode where the timing is severely retarded? If the ecm has no power over the distributor it cant very well control the timing can it? Or does it mess with the fuel curve also?
