L98 options...

Ok, Im a newbie so bear with me (I've handled my share of SBC's and more recently LS1's as I have a 98 Trans Am also). Im am (*** willing) going to be purchasing a 92 25th RS B4C to replace my old 92 25th RS that I sold a few years ago. This one has the 350 TPI motor that goes along with that B4C/1LE pkg.

Now, what should I do with it? This will be a fair weather/weekend warrior car so drivability isnt THAT much of a factor, but I LOVE to take the cars out and just drive. It only has an air foil and Edelbrock headers as of now (with dual cats and a Flowcrapper catback).

I was thinking along the line of a stock-shortblock solid roller motor (with new shortblock soon to follow ) or maybe just a strong top end. Im a big fan of TPiS so I'd like to keep them in mind for the cams and intake side. And maybe for PROM work as well.

This is a 700R4 car with 3.23's which may be replaced with 3.73's. Although the 700 is already been rebuilt, I was thinking a ProBuilt job with a 2200-2600 stall.

What about popular N2O systems? Blowers? Turbo kits?

Basically, I've been out of the TPI game and want to know whats hot and whats everyone doing with their cars. Cheap is good and faster is better.

Any thoughts

THANKS!

-Jackson

If the engine has low miles I would just forget the bs and put a procharger on there. You could even stick a six speed trans in there if you want, depending on how much money you'd like to spend, as that will be the deciding factor in what you do.

Nice car you're getting ahold of there.

I wouldn't go with 3:73s with TPI if you want 1/4 mile performance, TPIs don't breathe well past 4500 rpms. What's so wrong with your Flow cat-back. Maybe replace the muffler with the Hooker Aero Chamber, I like mine better than flows. Sound clip is in the signature.

Are you talking about ditching the L98 block eventually? Unless I read wrong.

I'd stick with it and replace the cam, get new heads.

Definately get the TC as that will help a lot. Be sure to get SFCs too.

Eventually???? Solid roller 383+cid.

for now? i want to drive it when i feel like it and run 12's every day with a stock shortblock. actually, if i tear into it for real id like LOW 12's, but for a while id like to stick with little cheap and free mods plus a PROM, the headers that are on there, and an LT4 Hotcam.

Ryan,

Welcome Aboard! Or is it, "Welcome back" ??

With an L98, the plenum is a serious restriction. Plan on some porting behind the throttle body at least, and consider matching the runners at the plenum and base as well.

Since you are looking at a speed/density ECM, an adjustable FPR could be very helpful.

As for PROMs, look at the aftermarket if you want, but all the fastest cars have custom PROMs that you can burn yourself. For about $150.00 you can be in the PROM burning business, and there is a huge reserve of technical expertise on our DIY PROM board.

If you're thinking stroker down the road, you might want to consider the LT1 intake conversion or MiniRam to take the TPI right out of the equation.

In any event, the cam and heads are a place to concentrate to start making serious power. Chevy left a lot of power on the table there - all we have to do is go out and get it. These engines typically run at about 60% of their true potential as delivered, and can be reliable at a lot higher power levels.

sooo....

can someone run down the free/cheap mods for me?

and the bolt-ons? (i.e. pulleys, t-stat, etc.)

What are the best ways to pull power CHEAPLY from the heads, cam, and intake. Thats the reason Im thinking about the LT4 cam ($175 ).

If money isn't an issue than I would say AFR 195s,Mini Ram,LT4 Hot cam,and a Vigilante converter..
I would think with a Mini Ram a 3.73 gear would work great for the track,or stop light to stop light fun......

Don't waste your money on pullies.
T-stat is like $4 or so. I'd get a 180* and make sure to change the temp at which the fans come on.

Headers, plan on around $350
Cat-back $200-$300
Cam $120 or so
