Firebird lights to TransAm lights.

I have an 88 Formula and got rid of the tailights for the ones on the 91 Trans Am GTA's. I hear that the wiring needs to be changed a bit. Any info on this? Thanks guys,
-paul

The TA and GTA have dual filament lamps, while the SC and Formula have separate lamps for the turn signals. The wiring changes would probably invlove the turn sinal switch/brake light switch wiring as well as the lamp socket swap.

transam taillights will physically bolt in place of the taillights on a base model firebird or formula firebird without any issues.

big issue is electrical wiring. to get the t/a lights working on a formula, one needs to install the taillight harness from a donor transam, and then needs to splice some wires under the dashboard.

if you do not know how to read electrical schematics or do not know how to use a soldering iron, it is probably not a good idea to attempt the transam taillight swap.

if you elect to try the swap, get a real repair manual for the car not the cheap aftermarket haynes or chiltons manual. if you do not already have one, see this thread:

for some more info on the taillight swap, see this thread:

there are three distinct revisions of thirdgen transam taillights.

82'-84' signified by big grooves in the lights
85'-90' smooth with a black checkerboard pattern over the lights
91'-92' similar to 85'-90' but has pontiac written on it in large block letters

very early thirdgen transams used a different number of taillight bulbs and different size taillight sockets than later transams did.
