you will have to drop your y-pipe to get proper access to it. Ive heard of it being done w/o doing this but a fail to see how. If the starter has shims makle sure to put them back in the same mannor and remember how all the wires attach to the solenoid or it wont start. Nother more physical point is the starter is quite heavy so be prepared to catch it when it comes free. Its also a good idea to clean all the connections to the starter/block/battery and check all wires. Better now then later.
I just changed my starter. You certainly dont have to remove the Y-Pipe. Granted, there is VERY little room to work with, but if you turn the starter so that all the connections are facing you (from under the car) the starter should come right out, then just do the reverse to install it. And yes its three wires, the larger post was 17mm, i think the small post was 8mm, but i cant remember exactly. Im still trying to get mine to start, cuz i need to know what order the two larger connections have to go on to the post.

i tried that and i couldnt get it to come through... But then again my old y-pipes all dented up so im suire that may have ahd something to do with it. Try it w/o taking the y-pipe off like smitty said first. My brother had to change his and after many minutes of f'n around he took the y-pipe off too.
Ya like i said, not easy at all. Just pop off the two mounting bolts, then disconnect the wires (dont forget to disconnect the battery!) Then maneuver the starter/solenoid so that the posts on the solenoid are facing you (from under the car) THen with much twisted, turning, pulling, and cursing. It will come out. :-)
On a side note, when reinstalling, does it matter in which order the larger two connections go?!? I installed my starter, and still not starting!

smitty... if your looking at the solenoind from the connection side with the starter installed, the larger terminal has all three red fused links as well as the direct feed from the batt connected. The smaller black wire from the ign. is connected to the right of the solenoid on one of the smaller terms. Thats how i hooked mine up, anyway. Doesnt smoke and it tuns the engine over so i guess it works.
Ok, the smaller connection is fine, its hooked up no prob. My question i guess is, does it matter which connection goes on the post first? THe battery connection? or the one with the fused links? That is all.
Thanx

shoudnt matter. Just as long as all connections are making good contact. I assume it would be better to have the direct link to the bat. go on first , though.
Thanx so much.
I will be checking out things later today and hopefully (fingers crossed) when i toss a new battery in it, it will start right up. The thing needs serious work, but it was free! But its been sittin for over a year, im just now startin to work on it.
Peace and Thanx again!

smitty, i saw your other post which reminds me... check the negative ground leading to the pass. side cyl head and clean if neccesary. That might cause some problems too. The starter completes its connection throught the block using it as a ground. The large black wire w/ a red strip is the positive feed that is connected to the solenoid.
