I think my engine is gonna go.

Ok, in the last 3 weeks my engine has started blowing more and more blue smoke. It was originally only on startup but now its whenever I get on it or just go. It stinks up the inside of my car and I cant stand it. So I think its time to rebuild the engine. So roughly how much would it cost to rebuild the engine at a shop and have them bore it out .60 over? Its a 305. I dont know how to do it myself and all my friends are worthless. Please, no 305-350 wars. I have been searching for 350s in the area and havent had any luck. Im thinking it would be cheaper to just rebuild the engine I have. Anyways Im open for any opinions but IF THIS TURNS INTO A WARZONE I WILL CLOSE THIS THREAD BEFORE THE MODS DO. Sorry, on a power trip Thanx guys.

P.S. Anyone in my area want to rebuild it??

Are you sure the 'new' blue smoke is actually burning inside the engine? It could be your valve cover gaskets leaking oil onto the exhaust manifolds or onto the intake manifold. I would first check the engine to see if there is oil on it anywhere.

Nah, Its burning it. It was just on start up but now its pretty much flowing out of the exhaust at a constant. I figure its time to rebuild or swap now anywhoo. 209k is a lot of miles for an engine without any work done to it.

i think i'd leak it or run a compression test before i go as far as pull the engine and rebuild it. last block i had cleaned, bored, cam bearings and freeze plugs cost me 150 dollars which from what i read on here is unreal cheap. i'd only go +.030 on the over bore unless it needed .060. best thing to do about prices is get the yellow pages out and call shops in your area and ask. too much varation from area to area for prices here to matter to you there.

Damn Ede, 150 bucks???????? That is cheap! I guess I should do that first. Ive been looking into buying Chuck Everly's Convertible but I dont know if I could afford the payments or not. Is .030 going to give me any noticeable power increase? If I can stay under $600 and get another 50,000 miles out of my engine Id be a very happy camper. See, I have that new 305 in the garage that is a double roller and has performance pistons and cam. But it got a little bit of rust on the cam and Im scared the pistons might need new rings..........................Which is no big deal to you guys but I have no clue about this stuff. Plus that is a 79 block. Im afraid it wont work with the computer or that something would go wrong. Damn Incompetence!

Ede, so all that stuff you got done? Is that considered a partial rebuild or what? My main concern is to quit burning oil and keep my car running..

that was just for cleaning the block, install cam bearings, freeze plug, bore +.030, and resurface the deck. i usually charge 350 to 400 to take apart, clean, measure and rebuild an engine back to stock specs. parts and machine work is at owners option and expense. i've saw chucks car and you won't find a better looking thirdgen anywhere. the paint is unreal and he hasn't sanded it or buffed it out yet.

Yes his car looks immaculate. I want to get it so bad but my insurance is outragous and I would have to get full coverage with that baby. Im getting married soon though so maybe then I could talk the wife into getting it. She is a camaro fan too but doesnt want a convertible. I guess I could tie her up Ok anywhoo. Not to be a moron, but what do you think I should do. I know you answered this but Im not really quite sure what you mean. So, I dont need the engine rebuilt? The car runs great but is starting to burn oil. If I could find a 350 to put in there Id do it but I cant find squat around here.

That's a

seriously low price. I paid $920.00 for the machine work on mine!! Of course I had the heads rebuilt too, with teflon seals added..

Really bad valveguide seals can cause blue smoke.

Do a compression check. If it's good, do your valve guide seals.

ede's price quote is about the same here in louisiana. You bring them the unassembled engine

165.00 vat clean, bore, install cam bearings and freeze plugs
20.00 polish crank ( could be all it needs)
58.00 turn crank
32.00 hang pistons on rods
150.00 head work: resurface, install bronze valve guide liners,
three angle valve job (valves, springs are
extra)
300.00 my price for disassembly, cleaning and reassembly.

450.00 rough estimate for s/r rings, rod & main bearings, gaskets
timing set,cam & lifters, oil pump and screen, pistons

Labor for engine removal and installation will vary from shop to shop.
