Scored the infamous "heater-only" firewall box!!!
Talk about luck; although I think the guy knew it was rare- he charged me $20. Now, do I need the box that's inside the passenger compartment? I didn't think so, I left it in the yard, but if I have to get it, I'll leave work right now and go.
One bolt hole doesn't line up, it's in the center, at the top of the heater box. On my heater/evap box, the bolt is more to the right. Is there a hole under there, or do I have to drill the firewall, or should I just not bother with the bolt.
And nobody told me this box is stamped steel!
I was glad to see that, I didn't have to worry about cracking it in half by accident.

To tell you the truth I have only seen one of these on a car (91 1LE camaro) but it looked like it had extra bolts on the cover as for the inside , I am no help there, but your flapper I beleive is the same between the cars.

You mean the one that's on the firewall right behind the blower motor? They looked a bit different, but not enough to cause a problem. Right now my whole a/c system is yanked, except for the evaporator. With this box, I could get rid of all of the a/c for good!

The duct work is slightly different but nothing major to overcome. I used black duct tape to seal the connections that were slightly off, nothing that can be seen anyway. I'm supprised you found one, I lucked out when I took the ac out of the camaro "rip
" and found a 2.5 with no A/C, the only 2.5 and the only car without A/C out of the hundreds I looked in. If I knew you were looking I could have took the one out of the camaro for ya.

I didn't notice any problems switching over... Maybe I left that one out though.... I know the inside bolts are a pain...
BTW I have two A/C delete boxes with blower motors I'd part with...
It's amazing how much easier it is to get at the plugs after taking the a/c out..

Perry, like I said, I think they were different; not sure, as soon as I got the box out, I danced out to the junkyard's office like a happy little girl!
SSC, yeah, I was surprised, too. I recently nabbed a set of fenders and a front bumper off an '86 Firebird that had an aftermarket AC system added to it. I was annoyed; that heater box was gone for good. (The box they put on the car looked homemade, all of the brackets were homemade, the sticker on the box was from an a/c company in Texas. The climate control had an a/c "max-warm" **** added to the fan speed **** of the factory controls.) Then, I find this heater-only box in another yard the next day! They're the only two f-bodies I've ever seen in junkyards that just had heaters, and I found 'em both in 3 days. Go figure. And if I knew I wanted one, I would've let you know... it was something I really wasn't searching for, but I always kept my eyes open for one.
Fast3rdgen, really? I do have a MIG, but finding a 2nd gen in a junkyard near me is like finding a 4th gen- it doesn't happen!
JoelO, thanks for the info! So you didn't need the "inside the car" side of the box, just the engine compartment box? Hm, maybe I'll swap boxes this weekend!
Maybe I should give the box a repaint. Hot pink? (As in, look at me! I've got one! Yeah!!)

Oh man, a vert without a/c... How can you DRIVE that thing? You must be stifled when it's hot outside, I mean there's barely any ventilation in that thing!

You'd be amazed how hot it can get in a convertible and how fast, when you stop in the middle of a big highway on a good hot sunny day with no breeze at about lunchtime... I have a 74 Caprice 454 convertible with a white interior and used to have a 69 Chevelle SS396 convertible with a black interior, the black was worse, you literally start stewing in your own sweat... I only drive them on cold days, like when it's less than about 85 outside. The 74 has A/C though (the 69 didn't), so sometimes I'm guilty of true great American excess: driving around a 5370 lb car with a 454 in it, with the top down and the air on

I found 2 in the junkyards in IL. I kept hearing how rare they were and the first day I looked I found a cheery non-AC box in the junkyard about 15mins away from my house. I then kept looking and found another one but it was a bit rusty.....I had work later on so I left with a smile on my face......now if I can only get my damn car to run right......
