Tell me what you think of my custom ram-air! (pics included)
I just spent this evening building a custom ram-air box for my '86 IROC (TPI). I went down to the local hardware store and bought a 10"x10' roll of aluminum flashing. Along with some extra parts I already had (sheet metal screws, electrical tape, and RTV silicone), it cost me about $5. I have yet to test this out since the RTV is still drying... I'm going to put it in tomorrow and see how it goes. Let me know what you think!

it really looks good . I like how it does not have a 90 degree bend in it . I like the curve , this will make the air go in smoother without bending ....Nice work man .I give it a

I don't know that would have been a turd to weld something thin like that.
Two words come to mind: Pop Rivet
If you havn't heard to much about it, you should look into it. I do a little sheet metal stuff (custom dash, etc.) around here, and my pop riveter is my best friend. You can get one at HomeDepot for 20 bucks, and the rivets cost pennies.
Looks good though, like to see pics when you get it installed!

Thanks for the replies! Here are two pictures of it installed:

I was thinking about pop rivets actually, but I didn't have a gun at the time so sheet metal screws worked for me. Granted, it doesn't look "professional" by any means, but it gets the job done and nobody sees it anyway. Now that I know the measurements of the air tubes, I may decide to do a cleaner one in the future.
As far as performance is concerned, I can definitely feel a difference in the way the car pulls. Second gear on my 700R4 always took forever to get through, and with this ram-air setup it seems to be a little bit quicker. I also noticed a difference in acceleration in fourth gear around 90mph. All I need now are two K&N's and I'll be set. And to top it off, it makes that neat "sucking" noise when you stand in front of it. Like I said, it's the best $5.19 I've spent on my car

that is pretty sweet. i was thinking the same thing but with a cowl hood as well. i was thinking of making a tin/aluminum box around the carb and 2 boxes like that for the front and the carb box extending to the back of the cowl hood

microtek, all you have to do to get that plastic out is push on it. Look where it attaches (towards the front of the car). There are a few clips that hold it in there... pushing downward should allow those clips to pop free of the plastic. There are actually two pieces of the plastic that are attached in the center, right under the hood latch. Use a screwdriver to pry up the little round fastener and that will come free. Finally, it's held to the back by a pair of those spiky door-panel fasteners. Just pull really hard and those should come out too. Hope this helps... I can clarify myself if you need me to.
