If you have to come on here and ask... if there's ANY doubts about the integrity of a lobe, do not run it !!!

Why do you say $250 ? That look like a flat tappet cam. Those cant go much over $100.

no kidding, 250 for a flat tappet? Dayam! GET A NEW ONE. trust me on this. I burned through THREE cams in the past because I tried to re-use old but "still good" cams with new lifters. 3 out of 5 times the cam will not wear right and some lobes will go round. I swear to *** this happened to me twice on one car (my firebird) and I just about pulled all my hair out till I realized it was because I was reusing an OLD cam with NEW lifters. Not a good idea. Trust me.

That looks like a normal wear pattern for a flat tappet cam.
Get a dial caliper and measure the dia of the lobe and compare to some others on the cam. .002" wear is acceptable.
Inspect the old lifters. Put two of them end to end and see if they will still rock together. (still convex).
Is this cam going back into the same motor?
You can deglaze the lifter bores with a small brake cylinder hone.
This will ensure that the lifters can spin in their bores when the motor runs. Wash down the lifter bores with brake cleaner. Change the oil. This is a major cause if cam lobe failure.

What are the specs on your "custom grind". There is probabily
an off the shelf grind that will work the same or better for a lot less.

I had a used cam reground to custom specs (thats what happens when there is no aftermarket cam available) for $30.

$250 seems like alot to me. I wouldnt use that cam either, it being flat tappet. Its gonna have that lifter for dinner.

Max,

We were wondering how old you are. But good grief, before there were aftermarket cams? Was that the paleolithic age?

Old enough. Not referring to a SBC or similar though, not all engines have cams available. When you work with the oddball application, sometimes you gotta make do. Couldnt get pistons either (well, not for less than $200 a pop) so I cut around .060 or so off the head to raise the compression. Heh. I had that cam cut in 1993.

The place that did it was a machine shop, but not your average performance/rebuilder. They did all sorts of stuff, from mass rebuilding to straightening axles, remachining spindles, etc. You'll find many people who have a real problem with 'regrinds' but I've run a few and they've held up fine for me.
