Steering box play

Just a quick question.
Should there be any play at the steering box at all.
Mine has some play and i think it's the cause of my car vibrating it only starts to vibrate at 2500rpm and up.
Could this be the problem.
Thanks

Jeff.

it's normal for a small amount of play to be there and it won't cause a vibration. if it's rpm dependent then it's caused by a miss in the engine and not steering or suspension, like if it was MPH dependent.

Whereas, if it is speed dependent, the first thing I would do is have the front wheels balanced.

i ithnk you need to restate the problem and when it does it. is it rpm or mph dependent? only does it moving above certin speed or above a certin rpm, you can increase the rpm and keep the speed down by using a lower gear. if it's a mph related problem then check out the front end, rotors for warpage and tire balance. thirdgens also have a history of drive shaft vibrations above 75 mph or so. if you have a vibrations above 2500 rpm sitting still then you have a miss or dropping a cylinder. make sure you have a good tune up and do a compression test.

It must be mph related because nothing happens when it's reved past 2500rpm standing still.
It only happens on the freeway at higher speeds.
Thanks for the quick reply.

if it's speed related check the tire balance, and look for worn suspensio nand steering parts

Do you for sure that it is the steering box that has the play in it? My car had play in the steering and I replaced the drag link and outer tie rods and it eliminated all but a very small amount of play in the steering.

I will get the wheels balanced and suspension checked on monday and hopefully it is the wheel balance.
I'm pretty sure the steering box has play in it 86iroctpi.
Because i hold the cupling that joins the steering shaft to the steering box and it turns about half an inch before the wheels even look like moving. Thanks.

Is that with or without the front wheels elevated?

Vader, thats with the wheels on the ground and when you are driving you can turn the steering wheel a good inch either way before the car reacts.I am only asuming that it is the steering box i hope it's not though.

If you end up replacing the steering box, keep in mind that irocs have the "quick ratio" box. Base model f-bodies have a different box that has a different number of lock-lock turns.
