it depends on how the car was treated. if it was it abused then no. otherwise i've seen people with over 200K on thirdgens and still tickin.

305 or 350? The 305s tend to be slightly more durable, if for no other reason than the bore/stroke ratio tends to ease the side load on pistons, and the bottom ends face a little less stress.

Either way, Red nailed it. Depending on how it was cared for, you can determine the reliability. I'd suggest a fairly thorough diagnostic, including cylinder leakage test, oil pressure at RPM via a separate mechanical gauge instead of the dash instrument, and an oil analysis. Obviously, anyn indication of a problem would require your attention. And don't overlook the trtansmission and axle.

After that, freshen all the fluids with synthetics if you want maximum wear resistance and reliability, not to mention better fuel efficiency and power output.

My camaro had 150k miles on it when I was running low 15's with it, then I felt comfortable enough selling it to my good freinds sister. Oh yeah, and I drive an '89 C1500 pickup to and from school with a 350 that has over 202,000 miles. You can't expect to get a th700 to last as long though, seems to be the weak link in the drivetrain. Like everyone else is saying, it really depends on how these things are taken care of.

My GTA was a 1-owner car when i bought and it was well taken care of. Its been one of the most reliable cars i've had. It has 110000 miles on it.

My thoughts are "Weak-*** motors never die"

My 2.8 is 160,000 and never had the valve covers off. Puff's (Valve seals) at cold startup but runs like a champ. Never touched the tranny or rear as well. Just an oil change every 3000 and tuneups and the usual (Water pump, alternators, starters, modules.....) every so often.

Never left me stranded though.

2.8....GM did a very good job an that gen. engine. the 2.8 and 3.1 versions of it. its absolutely indestructable. ive had many friends with it who have beat the HELL out of it and it runs like a dream. My girlfriend has a 2.8 in her 88 olds cutlass and i beat on that thing when i drive it. its run on WAY overdue tuneups perfectly. I change the oil every 2500.but once i let it run till 6500..and the oil came out amber..not like the dark chocholate a 160,000 mile engine usually does. I hate when people say hondas are reliable....when i use to work in the independant shops, the imports seemed to have more internal engine probs than the domestic. You let an jap motor go overdue on a tuneup......doesnt last too long
