I have a V6 and i just replaced mine yesterday. All i did was pull on it some to get it out then it slide out over the muffler pipe. It was just the right amount of space for it to come out.

youll probably have to move the exhaust. What I did the first time was actually take the starter apart while it was up in the car and let it fall...I was hoping i could get it in without dropping the exhaust but i couldnt.

This was the first thing I had to do on my 87 TA. I have a V8, so if you do too, this will be helpful. Im assuming the starter is a stock starter.. All you have to do is removed those three bolts holding the solenoid onto the motor. There isnt much in there, just a spring inbetween. i didnt want to mess with my exhaust...the bolts were all rusty and I wasnt about to have breaking problems. It was easy. Take the new starter apart the same way, stick the big part up first, then assemble the solenoid when its up there. It takes alittle patience, and alot of if you have to do without seeing, but I thought it was really easy. You dont mess anything up by takin it apart. Just a suggestion. If you mess the starter up, chances are you can take it back or something....if you screw your exhaust up, you are...well, screwed. Hope that helps. OH YEAH....dont forget to measure and use the shims if you need em...I forgot to put those on and almost ruined the new motor. Good luck!

I drop my "Y" pipe off of my exhaust mainfolds and then the starter drops right out. Takes a total of about 5 min to do...
