Should I buy this iroc? Is it worth it?

I sold my two 3rd gens late last year to buy a house and a 97 rs vert. I miss the 3rd gens though. If anyone remembers, I had a black 89 rs t-tops, and a teal 91 rs vert. There is this black iroc down the street from my work. It has t-tops, and the kid thinks it has a 305 in it. It is the tune port though. But he's not sure if the tranny is bad or not. It does leak fluid in the tranny. The way he describes it, it sounds like a bad seal, or pump. The windshield is cracked, dent on the pass fender, paint bubbles here and there, no lock cylinders on the doors. Said he bought it as a recovery theft. Ingition ok though. Bad starter, new catback. Says rebuilt motor, but doesn't know true miles. Dash says 140k. Says clean title in his name. Need tires, front ground effect cracked, interior filthy, maybe missing some plastic trim. Seats ripped, arm rest ripped. He said on the phone before I really looked at it close that he would like to get $1k for it. He said he's trying to sell it soon because he's leaving town. I was thinking of offering him $600 for it. What do you guys think? I couldn't drive it. He had to jump the started to get it started. Maybe bad started, or neutral safty switch. I sounds like a bad bearing on the compressor. Please give me some opinions. I haven't been on here for awhile now having a 4th gen, and even my 3rd gens were rs's, so wanna see if the iroc would be worth it. I know they're are more desirable, and being black with t-tops.

hmm...sounds like it is in rough shape, but if you are willing to put some work into i imagine it could be a real nice car. if you can do most of the work yourself and you could get it for 500 bucks its probably not that bad of a deal.

Sounds like you're going to be putting much more money into it than it's worth. There is a lot wrong with the car. I wouldn't pay more than $500 for it, assuming everything (especially the rear end and the engine) else is fine.

Yeah, that's goin to be a project, but if that's what you're lookin for, guess you got one. I'd go no more than $600 or so.

worst comes to worse you could pull it apart in pieces and sell it on ebay. You could get 400$ for the TPI so if you can get it for 600 that might be worth it,

Man a guy was selling a CHERRY 87 TPI 350 iroc a few weeks ago for 4k looked like it just came off the showroom floor i wanted it so bad but ended up going ahead with my engine install and ****.

Sounds beat. I can also guarantee the t-tops leak real bad as well. It probably has even more problems. Trans is not cheap to repair/replace. Bodywork is expensive unless you can do yourself. For $2500-3000 you can get a car that you can actually drive. Same your money until then or youll end up dumping 3 times that just to have a decent car.

exactly, I'm sure the majority of them are LG4s and LB9s.

If you have the $600 I would buy it and at least toss it in the front yard. IT may be someones dream car. you hate to see it go to waste.

My buddy found an '88 formula with 350. 80,000 miles on it. Power windows, power doors. Cassette stereo works great. WS6 package. 16 inch wheels. Hard top. Spoiler's cracked. Otherwise sweet.

Paid $800 for it.

My car is a '85 Trans Am 305 5-speed, bought it with 129,000 miles. Runs strong, no problems, t-tops, performance suspension. Seats were trashed. Dash was cracked. Essentially usless stereo. New exhaust, power windows.

Paid $1300 for it.

I wouldn't go close to $500 for what you're talking about... these cars right now are at the perfect age for purchase-- old enough to have a depreciated value, but not old enough to be classics. (YET). I think you can find a better deal with a lot less problems if you shop hard.... even if it is just for a project car.

I agree. If it were a 67-69 or 70 maybe. But there realy isn't any reason to buy a basket case 3rd gen.

Sounds like a good project car to me.

If you're the type of person that's going to redo the whole car, there's no point in wasting money on a nice one anyway, so this could be a great opportunity.

But, if you're just looking for a nice car, you'll lose your shirt bringing that one back.
