305 mods for eventual engine swap
I am planning on getting a new engine for my camaro in the next 3 years or so. I would also like to add some power and acceleration to my car in the meantime. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions on parts that will improve my 305 lg4, that will also be compatible with a 350 block.
Mainly- do 350 headers work on a 305
what cat-back to get
intake
etc.
I already plan to do suspension/steering stuff. I was mainly wondering if engine parts are worth my time and money,(swappable to 350 block)
Here is what I have going on now:
86 sc 5spd
305lg4
3.23's
edelbrock 600
carb spacer/adapter
Cloyes double row
Mallory Dist.
SuperCond. 8.5mm
160* therm.
American Racing 15" Turbine
Dayton HR 225 60 15
* Anything else need changed/considered since the computer is not a factor?
Thanks

Hooker 2055 headers, that come with a 3'' y pipe. And a Hooker cat-back.
Sound clip in the sig. You should pick up about 30hp estimated with both of these.
So, yes headers fit both 305 and 350.
I'd wait on an intake, as that isn't your weak spot right now, the exhaust is the major one, and the cam being the next.
i have a sound clip of my Hooker cat-back in the sig.

Thanks for the recommendation
I listened to your sound clip the other day. Sounds pretty mean. Think mine will be quieter on a 305?
Also- Should I remove smog, cat, air pump stuff if I was going to change to the Hooker 2055 headers and cat-back? These air tubes and such connect to my intake. That was why I was curious about changing the intake too.

Follow the mods in my sig. That'll get you 300 gross hp
And follow the link at the end to learn how to port and polish your own 305 heads. They'll flow like Vortecs when done and work just as well on a 350.

Thanks for the help guys.

300hp would be great. I guess heads, cam, lifters, and intake/exhaust are my targets.
Do brand of headers/exhaust make much of a diff., or is the piping size the main concern? Also is the Walker muffler better than Hooker? I was plannng on getting the hooker headers, y-pipe, and cat-back as Mark mentioned, unless I will get more of a gain from another product.
If I were to follow your mods, that would mean going back to a q-jet, and switching to 3.42 gears. I have an edel. 600cfm and stock 3.23's. Will keeping these, any performing the rest of your mods(or close substitutes), keep me from reaching the 300hp mark by very much?
Last thing, To run the HO dual snorkle, think I would have to ditch the carb spacer/adapter? This carb setup was on the car when Ibought it, so I don't know if this is a spacer, adapter, or if it is even necessary at all.. I swithed from a 9" open el. to a 14x2.25. I barely clear the hood now and I think the dual snorkle probably won't.
What do you think? COWL IND. HOOD or DUAL SNORKLE w/ no spacer
Sorry for all the questions in one post, but I need some sort of a plan to work towards. Otherwise I just sit around flipping through Summit all day.
Thanks again

Most aftermarket cat-backs will be equal on a 300hp engine, not till you get like a built 406 or something might you notice a 5hp difference.

No, your Edelbrock 600 cfm and 3.23s aren't going to hurt your hp at all. Changing to 3.42s isn't worth the expense.
I ran an Edelbrock 600 cfm on my engine for a few weeks and found I had to add a spacer above the carb for the factory dual snorkle cleaner to clear the choke.
But you could just as well go with a moderate 1 1/2" cowl induction hood and arrive at the same increase in hp.
