need help maybe alternator?

hey i was driving today in the rain and my radio started to go on and off and then my lights got dim and then my car sputtered to a stop, i tried to restart it and it would not crank and i had to get it towed home. i actually got it restarted breifly before i got it towed but then it died again, i think it is the alternator maybe any suggestions????????

Hmm, I'd suspect a cracked distributor cap.

sence it was raining it could just be taht u got water in ur distributor which isnt prity or so i hear....

I remember one time though , I ran thru a big puddle and all of a sudden I started losing power and steering, but the car never shut off. I guess the alt got wet.

But I still think this is a dist cap problem.

yea tomorow i will pull the cap out and clean it and see if she starts if not i wil have to look at my alternator
perhaps my amp was too power ful for it?

don't clean the cap, spend the 20 bucks or whatever it is and get yourself a brand new cap and rotor kit, wells, ac delco, and accel are all decent brands for our cars. as for your amp, if you just recently installed it change your ignition stuff or do a whole tuneup and get your car running perfectly before diagnosing if its your amp thats draining the power. Once a tuneup has been done you can rule out a lot of the things that could be causing problems. And also how long ago was this amp installed and how soon after did these symptoms start occuring

its my alternator i think i was checking it out today and when i started it it was only running on like 8 volts on the voltmeter and then it slowely went down to nothing so it looked like it was running off the battery and then it died. i am going to test it with a volt meter and then probably go for anew alternator

yea if i had saw this earlier i could have told u that lol..... thats EXACTLY what happened to me when i had the good ol tbi 305 in there..... like id hit the gas sometimes and it wouldnt go for like 5 seconds and there would be periods where id be on it and it would stop..... then it died in my driveway.
