Time for a new Engine! :-D

Need some suggestions here....
I have a 90 RS 305 5spd
Im ready to rip the 305 out and do something with some power. I DONT have a huge budget. I need something thats gonna bolt right up to the transmission. No 454's unfortunately.
I was thinking about a 400sbc, but they seem to be a lot of trouble to get any real performance out of. Im wanting somewhere around 300-350hp/350-400ft lb. Im gonna go carbureted, cant afford an aftermarket injection.

Any suggestions, recipes, or free 300hp engines?

any 350 shortblock with a decent cam and heads will yield about 300hp at least. If you go with a decent aftermarket cam and heads youll reach that goal with a 350 easily.

BTW that 5 speed isnt gonna hold up to the torque...you will destroy it very quickly. Might also wanna look into getting a t56 or auto.

No real performance from a 400?!? who told you that....the more cubes the better.

there is only one downside to the 400 and thats that it is getting hard to find nowadays.

Just get a 350 since you only want 300-350hp...hell youd probably have to detune a mild 400 to keep it from having more than 350hp

a mild 350 could give you those numbers..

are you going to buy a crate engine, or build the engine yourself?

Build it myself or get it built. Im not wanting a crate engine. I want to be able to choose my own parts etc

Dude...im lookin at about $1,500 here.
The build wont be a problem. Im not messed up about using a reworked block with cast iron heads. I just need good power for cheap.
